WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Dane's catch was highlighted on NFL Network tonight - it was quite the one handed diving circus catch. He's going to stick with the Bears me thinks...

Chicago Bears wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher's 30-yard TD catch- NFL Network

Sanzenbacher hopes to avoid cuts
August, 31, 2012
By brendanmurphy | ESPNChicago.com

CLEVELAND -- Dane Sanzenbacher hopes his cell phone stays quiet on Friday as he awaits word whether or not he made the Bears final 53-man roster as the No. 6 wide receiver. That's because the worst noise an NFL bubble player can hear on cut-down day is the sound of his cell phone ringer.

Dane Sanzenbacher will know by Friday night if he made the Bears' roster.

"It's a terrible way to go about it," Sanzenbacher said. I don't know how the way it's still done. They should let you know either way. I was thinking the same thing last year, 'why don't you call me either way'. Hopefully it doesn't ring."

Sanzenbacher stated his case one final time Thursday night when he hauled in a 30-yard touchdown pass from Josh McCown in the first quarter of the Bears 28-20 preseason victory over the Cleveland Browns.

"Dane is a good player," McCown said. "Unfortunately for Dane, he finds himself on a deep roster that's got some great players at the wide receiver position. But I'm telling you; Dane could be up there (on the depth chart) for a lot of teams. We really like what he brings to the table. He made a great catch on that (touchdown)."

It remains to be seen if Sanzenbacher's performance this summer swayed the Bears to keep a sixth receiver on the active roster, but if they do, the second-year wideout from Ohio State figures to be the guy.

"I don't know," Sanzenbacher said of his roster chances. "It's been different in the sense that last year I played a little more offense and no special teams at all, so it leaves that question out there. This year I played more special teams and a little less offense over the span of the camp. I'm not reading too much into it. I feel like I came out and don't have any regrets about the camp. I was given plenty of opportunitiesby this organization to go out and make plays. It's on me either way."

Notebook: Dane Sanzenbacher doesn?t take roster spot for granted
By MARK POTASH [email protected]
August 30, 2012

CLEVELAND ? Dane Sanzenbacher knows better than to read anything into anything when it comes to the NFL. So even though Rashied Davis? departure seemed to clear his path to the Bears? 53-man roster, he knew he had to make a play Thursday.

That?s why he returned a punt that could have gotten him obliterated in the regular season on the first possession of the Bears? 28-20 victory over the Browns in their preseason finale.

??Nobody remembers a fair catch, do they??? Sanzenbacher said. ??If it was close I was going to take it. Any time you can get the ball in your hands and make a play on special teams, it can turn some heads.??

Sanzenbacher was stopped for no gain on the punt return. But he was not to be denied. After an interception by Jeremy Jones on the Browns next possession, Sanzenbacher caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Josh McCown with a nifty one-handed grab against tight coverage.

??In a game like this you want to make plays. You want to leave that last impression,?? Sanzenbacher said. ??We talked about it before the game ? might as well do it now. You might not get another shot.??

CLEVELAND - 'Hang on Sloopy' rang through Cleveland Browns Stadium during the second half of Thursday night?s preseason game. It?s a song wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher has heard plenty of on a football field.

But this time he wasn?t in the familiar scarlet and grey in which Buckeyes fans became so accustomed to seeing him. Sanzenbacher stood on the sideline in the iconic blue and orange of the Chicago Bears.

It?s a uniform he hopes he?ll get to wear again this season after final roster cuts are made Friday.

?I think I had a solid camp. I don?t think it came down to one specific game. It?s been a long few months, putting the work in and earning the trust of these coaches and players,? Sanzenbacher said.

He impressed Thursday night against the Browns, making a one-handed touchdown grab and showing versatility returning punts on special teams.

?In a game like this you can?t get in your own head. You just gotta relax and go play. It can be tough in games like this to keep yourself in it,? Sanzenbacher said.

The second year wide receiver?s prospects look brighter after the Bears cut Rashied Davis Wednesday.

Chicago boasts a deep group of receivers, adding Brandon Marshall and second round pick Alshon Jeffery this offseason to Devin Hester and Earl Bennett.

Marshall was a favorite target of Cutler when the two played together in Denver and figure to be in line for a strong season reunited with his former quarterback. The Bears will most likely keep five receivers and the battle for that spot figured to come down to Sanzenbacher and Davis.

Sanzenbacher had a solid first season working with Cutler and Caleb Hanie, catching 27 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

The former Ohio State captain has his roots in Ohio, born in Toledo and beloved by the Columbus faithful.

?Ohio?s always home for me,? Sanzanbacher said.

Now, back in Chicago, Sanzenbacher waits to see if come Friday he will be a Bear.

Chicago Bears: Dane Sanzenbacher makes roster bid with diving TD catch

CLEVELAND -- There shouldn't be any doubt about Dane Sanzenbacher's roster status now. The second-year player from Ohio State was believed to be on the bubble when the Bears started practice this week. His situation got a boost after veteran Rashied Davis, who suffered an undisclosed injury, told the Chicago Tribune he had been released. Sanzenbacher and Davis had seemed to be in a battle for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Good thing he made it, I hate to have to buy another teams jersey with his number on it. Nice job Dane.

Bears appear covered with Sanzenbacher
October, 5, 2012

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- In hindsight, it appears the Chicago Bears made a wise decision to keep Dane Sanzenbacher on their 53-man roster as the sixth wide receiver to start the regular season.

Dane Sanzenbacher gives the Bears a relatively experienced receiver to turn to if Earl Bennett misses another game.

With Earl Bennett sidelined last week because of a lingering left hand injury, the Bears activated Sanzenbacher for the first time this season after he caught four passes for 49 yards and one touchdown in the preseason to help earn his second consecutive roster spot.

Sanzenbacher played 17 snaps and was targeted only one time in the Bears' 34-18 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. But there is a certain comfort level when a team turns to a backup that has a reasonable amount of game experience -- Sanzenbacher had 27 receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns last season as a rookie.

"Whenever something happens you want to make sure you have a guy in there that has been though the battles and that you trust," Bears receivers coach Darryl Drake said. "A guy that is going to go in there and do the things you ask him to do. It's very comforting. Dane can play all the positions, and one thing with him, you know that whenever he's in there he's going to give it everything he's got. That's a good thing."

It's also a good thing when the starting quarterback is a fan of your work. Jay Cutler praised Sanzenbacher numerous times in the preseason, an endorsement that no doubt didn't hurt Sanzenbacher's chances of making the team when final cuts were due at end of August.

With Bennett officially listed as questionable, there is a chance Sanzenbacher could be active again Sunday in Jacksonville. If Bennett sits again in Week 5 it could be with the mindset of getting him back on the field Oct. 22 after the bye when the team hosts the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football.

Dane video interview

Dane Sanzenbacher goes 'In The Zone' with Dhani Jones

The Bears wide receiver is profiled by former NFL player Dhani Jones.

Every NFL player has their own story of how they made it. The ones we know the best are the first round picks who come in with all the accolades.

But then there are guys who like Dane Sanzenbacher, who go undrafted and sign their first NFL contract to minimal fanfare. Sanzenbacher calls himself "one of the most unrecognizable" captains at Ohio State but he made a very recognizable difference to one family.

In The Zone with Dhani Jones steps into Sanzenbacher's life and takes the journey from his time at Ohio State to his NFL life today.

Dane always seems to be flying under the radar. Maybe this is why he is such a good receiver! He's not a big target, certainly not as big as #15 on the Bears team. But he is smart and doing these cameo interviews make him more noticable. His message always seems to be so noble. Hard worker, takes nothing for granted, appreciates his opportunities, and continues to push himself to be better. Great example to the youth out there. Sure proud to see this Buckeye as a Bear.

Sanzenbacher has shot at some time in rotation
Largely inactive this year, Bears receiver could play because of injuries to Hester and Jeffery

Dane Sanzenbacher has been inactive for eight of the first 11 games, and the second-year receiver has just one catch for 7 yards this season.

But Sanzenbacher might get some meaningful playing time Sunday.

Devin Hester is out with a concussion and rookie Alshon Jeffery continues to recover from arthroscopic knee surgery. That means Eric Weems and Sanzenbacher have to step into the receiver rotation along with Brandon Marshall and Earl Bennett.

Sanzenbacher says he's ready.

"It has been a weird season, being in and out of there and being active and inactive,'' Sanzenbacher said. "But I'm obviously excited to contribute where I can.''

Sanzenbacher had two catches for 26 yards in last year's 38-14 lost to the Seahawks.
