WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

Please comment on the chances of Canadian Andy Fantuz sticking with the Bears at all, even on the practice roster. It looks to me that the Bears are loading up on receivers. Does Andy even have a sniff of making it through training camp, let alone being on the team? He has great hands, a fair-sized body but is quite slow and is in his late 20s. He has never played one down on special teams. I have special interest in him because the Riders of the CFL could sure use him back as fast as possible. Gerry Hanke, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Too early to say about Fantuz. He has not stood out in the early going but there is a lot of time for him to make his mark. Fantuz is going to have to be a solid special-teams contributor to make it, though. The Bears probably will keep five receivers on their 53-man roster. Assuming all are healthy, Johnny Knox, Devin Hester, Earl Bennett and Roy Williams are locks. Sam Hurd is a strong possibility because the fifth spot usually goes to a special-team ace. It looks to me like Fantuz mostly is competing with Hurd and Dane Sanzenbacher at this point. If Fantuz does not make the 53, there is a chance the Bears will ask him to stick around on the practice team. NFL teams almost always keep receivers on their practice teams because they need extra sets of legs to run routes during the week.

Sounds like Dane has some healthy competition at this point. Dane hasn't played much on special teams and needs to beat Fantuz out as the 5th receiver.

What are Dane Sanzenbacher's chances of landing a roster spot?
Jeff Sherlund

Undrafted rookie wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher has impressed Bears coaches with his performance early in training camp, but it's going to be difficult for him to earn a roster spot given that veterans Roy Williams, Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, Earl Bennett and Sam Hurd are ahead of him on the depth chart. Sanzenbacher?s best chance to make the team will be as a special teams contributor, something he?ll have to prove he can do in practice and the preseason games. I would think that Sanzenbacher is a candidate for the practice squad, where he would be able to continue to develop.

We'll see, didn't the Bears have a few drops last season in key games by the aforementioned players ... hmhm - Johnny Knox. They would be smart to "develop" him on the field.

Cutler on-target again in Bears' practice

By Mark Potash on August 5, 2011 12:13 AM | 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

You didn't have to wait to see the film to know that Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is making progress in training camp.
Cutler completed 14-of-18 passes in the ''team'' portion of practice at training camp Thursday night at Olivet Nazarene University. He completed passes to nine receivers -- Earl Bennett (twice), Roy Williams (twice), Johnny Knox (twice), Devin Hester (twice), Matt Forte, Chester Taylor (twice), Dane Sanzenbacher, Kellen Davis and Eddie Williams.

Getting in the swing - information from Chi town is spotty.

Tonights family night practice was cancelled because the turf cracked due to lack of water. What they forgot to water the field - isn't Lake Michigan full of fresh water!

More observations:

--For what it's worth, Dane Sanzenbacher also seemed to be taking reps from Knox the last time the Bears practiced in pads at night on Monday. Sanzenbacher, by the way, still got his share of reps with the first unit. He had a bad drop on a pass from Cutler over the middle in the team drill. But Hanie went right to him on the next play and the rookie from Ohio State made the play. The kid's going to get every chance to make it.

Bad Drop. He's not used to catching passes that are on target I guess!

Undrafted Sanzenbacher catching eyes of Bears' veterans

BOURBONNAIS -- The Chicago Bears haven't had a lot of luck with undrafted rookie free agents over the last decade.

Cameron Worrell and Brandon McGowan stuck as safeties who were fine special teams players. But beyond them the search for a hidden gem hasn't turned up much. In a year without an offseason, it's going to be even more difficult for the rookie free agents to find homes because they haven't had time to learn systems and clubs need reps to get their veterans and draft picks ready for the season more so than mining for a prospect that fell through the cracks.

So after a little more than a week at Olivet Nazarene University, it's impressive that wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher has carved out some playing time for himself with the first team. The Ohio State product picked the Bears out of 25 offers he had. The depth chart and a chance to fit in Mike Martz's scheme sold him even if he didn?t know how free agency would play out where the Bears added Roy Williams and Sam Hurd to the mix.

Hey they are talking reps with the first team and the possibility of a 6th WR. Dane making the most of his opportunity.

Hester, Knox, Bennett, and Roy Williams are LOCKS to make the team. Its an open competition among Fantouz, Sanzenbacher, & Hurd for whatever roster spots remain open. Whoever else makes the team will be a backup WR and better provide ST help (ex. the departed Rashied Davis). That, plus size and NFL experience, puts Hurd as the likely 5th WR.
Everything I have read about this kid (Sanz), even from before the draft, has been glowing about his work ethic, route-running, sure-handedness, and ST ability. He could be one of those rare "undiscovered gems"--not a bonafide star but the kind of player who contributes, gives you valueable minutes, and every NFL team wants on their bench.
If this is more than just training camp hype, I hope the Bears find a way to keep this guy around.

Bear Camp Video Highlights

Dane catching the ball halfway through on a couple of sideline routes. Look for #18. Hope you guys don't mind the barrage of Sanzo information (RSS News feeds). He has been my favorite Buckeye and has always been that Buckeye who did id right. Now the Bears Fans get to enjoy his bravado and football skills. It looks like he's turning a few heads, let's see how he does next weekend in their preseason opener against the Bills. :osu:
