WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

With Jay Cutler at the helm, I would assume that Dane will have a very respectable first season, and that is in no way a compliment to Cutler's ability. The Bears love to pass the shit out of the football, and seeing as Dane has Wes Welker-like ability, I feel inclined to believe that Dane will get at least 2 or 3 catches on slant routes in each game, alone. Dane could have definitely picked a better team to play for - he could have mentored under some finer receivers and caught passes from better quarterbacks - but with that being said, he picked perhaps the best destination for an undrafted rookie to immediately showcase his talents to a team that is in dire need of WR help. I won't be surprised at all if Dane has a 700 yard season this year, and I wouldn't be shocked either if he develops into the best WR that came from tOSU in the past 5 years.

From a Bears Fan and OSU Fan about Dane

You guys are gonna LOVE this guy. I remember when OSU used up a valuable sholarship on this kid and the message boards went into meltdown mode. All this kid did for the next four years was make PLAY AFTER PLAY AFTER PLAY.......hes tough, can take a hit, great character, and deceptively fast. You got a good one with this one, and at this price???????????-------> WOW! Be excited,,,youll love him before its all over.

Dane has a Business Degree - he'll take their money and show them he's worth a whole lot more as the season progresses. This is how he came to play for the Buckeyes - he'll prove his worth many times over!

Congrats Dane!! It's great that he had so many teams to choose from.

I've been reading some forums with Bears fans doubting Dane because of his size, speed, blah blah blah. You all know what I'm talking about. But I trust Dane will prove them all wrong just as he did to you Buckeye fans at OSU!

GO DANE! Represent!

Early Christmas Present

Today, the big news is all about NFL teams releasing players and signing undrafted rookie free agents. The Chicago Bears were busy today, and they picked up a hidden gem in Dane Sanzenbacher from Ohio State.
He may only be 5'10"-5'11", but the speedy wide receiver has great hands and could turn into the next Wes Welker. Sanzenbacher lead the Buckeyes in receiving last year with 55 receptions for 948 yard and 11 touchdowns.

From the Bucks to the Bears. That's only a 4 hr car ride to Chicago from Toledo.

Those are stupid Bears fans who don't understand that wide receivers are supposed to catch and hold on to the football. Also, he's a high character un-drafted free agent who 25 other teams tried to sign. This is a no lose situation.

It almost got to the point where you felt like this thing was going to drag out forever," said Sanzenbacher, Ohio State's Most Valuable Player in 2010. "Then it culminated with a 12-hour period or so of just chaos and calls, trying to figure out where I wanted to go and get the decision made. It was kind of wild how it went down."

Sanzenbacher was among the most coveted of unsigned rookies. His agent, Joe Flanagan, said about 25 teams pursued the wide receiver. Sanzenbacher narrowed the list to the Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns before picking the Bears.

"We got texts and calls through the night - 1, 2, 3 in the morning," Flanagan said. "I've never seen a more aggressive and heartfelt, emotional sales process and pitches from NFL coaches on an undrafted person. We had a lot of choices he had to narrow down based on depth chart and scheme."

Flanagan would not disclose Sanzenbacher's signing bonus, but he said other teams offered considerably more than the Bears. Chicago's lack of depth at receiver and Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz's history of success with receivers of Sanzenbacher's type proved decisive.

In Sanzenbacher's case, Flanagan believes the odds are good.

"As I look at the complete unrestricted (free-agent) market and the undrafted guys, there's no skill set like Dane's out there," Flanagan said.

"I feel if Dane can find that niche in the offense with coach Martz that other guys historically have taken, then Dane can make a real good run - even as a rookie - and be real productive."

Sanzenbacher wasn't drafted because his measurables - a 5-foot-11, 180-pound frame and so-so 4.55 speed in the 40-yard dash - overshadowed his toughness and exceptional hands in the view of NFL decision-makers.

"If Dane gets reps and opportunities to play, they'll never cut him," Flanagan said. "I believe that 100 percent."

Sanzenbacher hasn't forgotten that draft-day disappointment, even as teams aggressively courted him on Monday.

"They're still one of the same teams that passed on you," 254 times in the draft, he said. "I don't think you ever lose that thought. You always have something to prove."

Daniel Wolf writes about Sanzenbacher:

The Buckeyes' 2010 MVP was projected to be taken in the later rounds of April's draft but when he was not many, including ESPN's own Jon Gruden, were confused as to why.

Sanzenbacher comes into an offensive system ran by Mike Martz, which thrives on the passing game. Gunslinger and starting quarterback Jay Cutler needs weapons and Sanzenbacher can easily be a target over the middle or even down the sideline, for Cutler.

In fact, Sanzenbacher was more of a deep threat at OSU last year, than fellow starter DeVier Posey was, so the assumption that Sanzenbacher is a slot receiver is misleading.

I have it from reliable sources that Dane was concerned about getting enough touches in the '09 season with TP 2 Posey getting a lot of attention. Dane's Uncle spilled the "buckeyes" to a friend of mine that said he thought that TP would favor the Posey connection and Dane would be overlooked. Posey drooping the ball a few times in critical game situations helped turn the tables on that. Dane's roll improved to not only the slot receiver roll but also as a deep threat (Toledo Game in Browns Stadium) to name one game. Look for more of this as the Bears find out what a gem that have on the roster. :osu:
