WR Dane Sanzenbacher (Official Thread)

http://www.nationalfootballauthority.com/2011/07/former-buckeyes-wr-dane-sanzenbacher.html

"What's wrong with this world?" said Gruden, when referring to the fact Sanzenbacher wasn't picked in any of the seven rounds of April's draft.

Thanks Jon Gruden - the world is just fine now!

Gruden talked about how Sanzenbacher was always aware of the current play and when he saw Pryor get in trouble or make bad decisions, Sanzenbacher was the player who bailed Pryor out. Even citing Sanzenbacher's recovery of Pryor's fumble in the end zone at the Sugar Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks. Yet Pryor still received the MVP honor, even though Sanzenbacher shined brighter than the quarterback in the game.

Pryor looked visibly annoyed that Gruden kept bringing up Sanzenbacher's name over and over again during his ESPN special.

It all comes out in the wash... :osu:

Dane Sanzenbacher Set Up to Shine as a Bear

Dane Sanzenbacher could be one of those undrafted free agents we talk about for years to come

Dane Sanzenbacher led his Ohio State Buckeyes in receiving in 2010. He tied the record for most touchdown receptions in a game in week four in 2010. He was a team captain and MVP for the Buckeyes in 2010 and oh by the way, he wasn?t taken in the 2011 NFL draft. Why? I?m not really sure. On the bright side, he did agree to terms with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent after being contacted by 25 of the 32 NFL teams

The Bears signed four wide receivers, including one who was pursued by 25 of the 32 NFL teams, according to agent Joe Flanagan. It may have helped Dane Sanzenbacher that ESPN analyst Jon Gruden has talked about him as if he were Jerry Rice.

Sanzenbacher and offensive coordinator Mike Martz appear to be an excellent match. Sanzenbacher isn't the most physically gifted receiver, which explains why he was passed over on draft weekend. But he runs outstanding routes and has a knack for getting open and making plays.

He was very productive in college and is highly effective in the slot. Sanzenbacher helped his stock with a good week at the Senior Bowl.

He's not the prized free agent fans are pining for. At 5-11, 175 pounds, he isn't the big target that so many believe Jay Cutler needs, either, but if Dane Sanzenbacher can make half the impact with the Bears that he made for Ohio State, their search for a quality receiver might be over.
Sanzenbacher, the Buckeyes' 2010 MVP, Notre Dame and Hubbard running back Robert Hughes and Northwestern defensive tackle Corbin Bryant were among 26 rookie free agents signed by the Bears.
After making 27 starts at Ohio State, where he finished with 1,820 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns, Sanzenbacher chose the Bears over 24 other NFL teams because he believes he fits offensive coordinator Mike Martz's system.
It came down to the Bears and the Cleveland Browns. Even though he?s from Toledo, Ohio, Sanzenbacher chose the Bears.
"We knew going in that it would be a good fit for me," Sanzenbacher said Tuesday of the Bears. "When it came time to entertain these offers, it came down to a gut feeling. When everything was equal, I had to go with my best chance to play, and I felt it was Chicago."

Great Dane

As an undrafted rookie free agent trying to make the team without any offseason workouts, wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher has one one thing in mind when he comes to practice: ??Do something they?re going to remember.??

The 5-11, 180-pound rookie from Ohio State is doing just that. Sanzenbacher earned reps with the first team in practice Monday
and will get more after catching everything that came his way.

??He?s got a chance; he?s a player,?? Bears wide receivers coach Darryl Drake said. ??You get an opportunity to make plays, and that?s what he does. He?s steady. I?ve been impressed with what I?ve seen so far from him. We?re going to keep giving him opportunities.??

Sanzenbacher had 55 receptions for 948 yards (17.2 yards per catch) and 11 touchdowns at Ohio State last season and was a first-team All-Big Ten pick.

??I haven?t had a choice but to raise my game,?? he said. ??Having everything shrunk down with the lockout, it?s even more limited time for rookies to get reps. And you?ve got to make the best of your opportunities. You want to show them you?ll do whatever it takes to make this team. That?s what I?m trying to do every day.??

??He?s a good football player,?? Smith said. ??We want to get the players in game-type situations. He?s making the most of it. We all noticed him tonight.??

Sanzenbacher catches a lot of attention
By Bob LeGere

BOURBONNAIS ? It was difficult to not notice undrafted rookie wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher during the Bears? muggy Monday night practice, their first with pads.

The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder from Ohio State is one of the smaller players in camp, but he made several big plays on a still, humid night under the lights. A couple of deep sideline routes and another couple in the middle of the field, flashing sure hands and enough quickness to create separation.

?That?s what you expect from a Buckeye,? said coach Lovie Smith, who coached linebackers at Ohio State in 1995. ?He had a lot of different opportunities coming in, and he chose us.

?He?s a good football player. We want to get the players in game-type situations, and he?s making the most of it.

?We all noticed him tonight.?

Sanzenbacher was a team captain and the Buckeyes? MVP last season, when he caught 55 passes for 948 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Especially this year, when new players haven?t had the luxury of learning the playbook in the off-season, Sanzenbacher will have a narrow window to earn a job.

?I haven?t had a choice but to raise my game,? he said. ?Having everything shrunk down with the lockout, it?s an even more limited amount of time for rookies to get reps, and you have to make the best of your opportunities out here.?

Wearing #18 according to Chicago sports radio.

I'm not sure what he did on the field yesterday but if he keeps it up, things sound very very good for him. There was a lot of chatter on local sports radio about Dane today. He really must have turned some heads.

Give 'em hell Dane!

''He's a good football player,'' Smith said. ''We want to get the players in game-type situations. He's making the most of it. We all noticed him tonight.''
Sanzenbacher isn't big by any stretch and his reported 40 speed of 4.56 is far from blazing for a 5-11 wide receiver. What does he do well?
''His routes are good. They're solid,'' Drake said. ''He's where he's supposed to be. He doesn't let me screaming and hollering at him faze him. He just comes out and works. As long as he continues to do that he should be OK.''
The Bears liked Sanzenbacher when they did their draft evaluations, but had priorities ahead of a wide receiver in the draft. Sanzenbacher reportedly had 25 NFL teams contact him and was offered more money by a couple of them, but chose the Bears.
''I didn't come to Chicago because I thought it was my best chance to play in the NFL. Or if it didn't work here I could get somewhere else. It was because I wanted to make this team. I felt like, 'I'm undrafted and I get a choice. I want to go to a team that I wanted to make and play for them.' And I felt this was it.''
Why the Bears?
''I don't know. I was never a big NFL fan growing up. I never had a team I followed or anything. I think when you just look at a team's personality, I think there's a certain toughness about Chicago and a certain grit and all that. And I think it's a team that is on the brink of being great and winning a championship and I want to be a part of that.''

Well he liked "a certain toughness about Chicago" - well Chicago fans, you're going to love the toughness about your new rookie WR. He wrote the book on toughness. I think Dane picked the right team or did the team pick him?

Can't wait to see #18 in his Bears uniform...

Go get em Dane.:io:

Bears 2011 Schedule
Preseason Sat.13 BILLS 7:00PM WBBM CBN/WFLD
Aug 13th at 7:00 is the first preseason game on both radio and TV. Where is the world do you find channel CBN?

I think that means the Chicago Bears Network. WFLD is just the local Fox TV station in Chicago. I don't know if they have any webcasts, either live or delayed.

Here's the TV schedule. The lockout cost the Bears from having the Hall Of Fame preseason opener in Canton this Sunday, which would have been nice for Richard Dent's induction, and for the first opportunity to see Dane in a Bears uniform.

They will be on ESPN against the Giants on Monday night, Aug 22.
