Columbus- When her grandson left St. Ignatius for Ohio State, Lourdes Gonzalez told him he'd have to start using a new name because football already had a Tony Gonzalez, the All-Pro tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Like mother, like son. Jenna Gonzalez could not stop calling her boy Anthony on Wednesday. She knew he was about to announce he was giving up his final season of eligibility at Ohio State to enter the NFL draft.

COMMENTARY
Receiver has no reason to apologize to anyone
Friday, January 12, 2007

ROB OLLER

Good for Anthony Gonzalez. He beat the system. The system that paints college football players as hirsute knuckle draggers. The system that says earning a degree in four years is reason to suspect grade tampering. The system that cheers a receiver?s routes but jeers his rights.

I think Martz will be looking for WRs that fit his mold...generally small, fast guys that run precise routes. I think the Lions would look at him in the early second or move up from the third for him. Especially if they don't get Kevin Curtis in FA.

I think they'd take them both if they can trade Mike Williams.

Martz could tear up the NFL with Roy Williams, Kevin Curtis, Anthony Gonzales, and Mike Furrey at receiver.

This is right up there with the guy who wanted to email Pittman because he didn't think anyone was giving him good advice... :roll2:

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to Anthony "Gonzo" Gonzalez! You're a great young man and I think you've got quite a future in the NFL -- not to mention afterwards. It looks like I'll have a new NFL team to root for on the side.

No Troy Smith probably equals lower stats and lower draft buzz next season...I think he's probably making the best decision for him, and he will go higher than I envisioned he could, so best of luck to him.

I think that's part of it, but there is a part nobody is mentioning. I've seen him mention he wants to go to grad school at Stanford, be a Rhodes Scholar, etc. and he is scheduled to finish his bachelors this year. In that situation, it doesn't make much sense for him to attend Grad School at Ohio State.

All the draft babble aside, I'm really going to miss Gonzo (once known to a friend of mine as "who's that white guy playing WR?")

I have the feeling that he spent a lot of time whispering words of wisdom in the ears of our next generation of WR's--even though he'll be gone next year, he'll still have a hand in our success.

Thanks, Gonzo.

The minimum salary for a rookie next year will be $225,000. Gonzo will make considerably more than that as a drafted player. Leaving early is the only rational decision anyone other than Bill Gates could make. The idea that his leaving is a poor decision is friggin ridiculous. He's going to have a degree and then he gets to play a child's game for lots o' money....Where's the decision?

Seriously...225,000 as a minimum is very nice...even if he made the minimum and stuck around for 2 or 3 years he could have all of the money he needed for law school and probably enough to live pretty well during that time...
