I took my Officer basic course at Ft. Eustis in the fall of 67. On our first week end off three fellow looeys insist I take a ride with them Athens, GA to see, "real football."

We stop in some shit kicker town to grab lunch. All four of us order cheeseburger, fries and Ko-cola. Orders arrive and I look around. Their burgers are juicy, big slice of tomato, fresh, crisp lettuce.

I look at mine and the burger looks like a roofing tile. I got the butt end of a tomato that was up for social security and my lettuce is brown and screaming, "Water!" I look around again to be sure my vision is correct when Bill Agee looks over and states, "Wail, Forrest, looks to me like you got the Northern Special."

Yeah, I'm off topic. So the fuck what. It's my birthday.

I would gladly murder anyone that said Donato's is the worst pizza, in exchange for a Donato's store in Houston.

New York style pizza sucks ass unless you like to eat grease....When I lived in NC that is all they had and all you had to do was hold a slice up and the grease would drip off it for days.....Chicago style pizza is the bomb...

That being said in a David Letterman like countdown:

5. Pizza Hut
4. Papa Johns
3. Dominoes
2. CiCis

And the No. 1 suckiest pizza is.....

Little Ceasers.....

My guess is you never had real NYC pizza then. (Not NY "style," whatever that is - and for sure you aint gonna find true NYC pizza in NC.) Pizza is one of those things like beer and bread - the recipes dont travel well from because of many geographical factors, the water being among the most important.

Consistently best pizza I ever had - Lombardi's. No close second.

Excellent point NYB, as I have not actually had NY pizza in NY. I will say though that I am not a fan of pizza based on NY pizza, which wherever I have had it (which I have beyond NC) is thin, little sauce, and greasy.

Now Chicago pizza, which I have had numerous times in Chicago is just kick ass, especially if it is deep dish.

Donato's is garbage. It's a fucking cracker with ketchup and cheese.

Eat glass, motherfucker. You spoiled brats in Columbus that complain about Donatos... try living somewhere else (other than NYC... or Joe's in Santa Monica, CA) and having nothing but shit-pizza to eat. Chicago is like pizza hell unless you like the pizzacake everyone swears is the best in the world... if I wanted food made in a dutch oven, I'd go camping and make a fucking cobbler.

Donato's is [Mark May]ty pizza any way you slice it. Never liked when I lived in Columbus and could not understand the cult like following it had/has.

You can get good NY style pizza in areas where you have a bunch of ex-New Yorkers, and we have plenty of those down here. In fact, I have a neighbor who grew up in Brooklyn (lived there for 40 years), and he has taken me to 3 different spots down here that he says rival the local joints in his home neighborhood.

The absolute worst pizza I ever had was in the cafeteria of Greene Co. Joint Vocational School (aka Green Joint but now known as GCCC) my soph year in HS.

The pizza was very chef boyardee'ish and the grease ate through the paper plate before I made it back to a seat.

By ate through I mean ate through...the plate literally disintegrated.

Favorite area pizza place (since Giordano's is in Chicago) would be The Flying Pizza (across from Wright State's campus).

I had a couple of buddies who worked there in the mid 90's...would hit it all the time.

Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers in the same strip was another common stop.

CiCi's "pizza" is the worst. Tombstone frozen at the supermarket is better than that crap.

Unfortunately they make Mac-N-Cheese pizza, which my daughter loves, so I get dragged there a couple of times a year. CiCi's should DIAF.
