Well Zidane definitely made sure no one will forget the end of his career. Hilarious how the media Lemmings were all fawning all over him, comparing him to Michael Jordan and the like. Yeah, I don't seem to remember Jordan spending the last minute of his career on the court punching some dude in the testicles or something.

Screw him, and if the frogs want to blame anyone, they should blame him, not the goalie or the guy who put the penalty off the bar.

What a game! What a Cup! It's funny that the United States was the only team that Italy didn't beat. It was definitely a great cup, and Zidane got what he deserved. It's unfortunate that he had to end his career like that, and unfortunately for him, all of his achievements will be overshadowed by the fact that he let his arrogance get the best of him in one of the biggest games as his life. He failed his team, himself, and most of all his excuse of a country, France.

Zidanes chep shot for those that did not see...

And here is a video of the guy he head-butted, easy to see how this guy could get under your skin, but Zidane is still a dumbass.

yeah, I'm sure you could come up with "low-lights" of a lot of futbol players over a number of years. Zidane himself isn't a choirboy before this. He got 2 yellows early in this tournament and was red carded for stepping on somebody in 1998. I think he's had a few other incidents in his non-WC playing career.

When I first watched the Zidane incident I thought he was having an ongoing exchange with Materazzi and that the head butt was an immediate impulse reaction to an over-the-line comment. However, on the replay I don't see Materazzi saying anything and it looks very much like Zidnae jogged in front of Materazzi to put himself in position to administer the attack. That left plenty of time to reconsider his plan and choose to end his career (and perhaps France's WC hopes) in some alternative fashion.

One of the worst displays I can recall in sports.

While the games themselves were wonderful they have to come up with a way to end matches other than PKs.

Zidane's ouster was truly, truly strange.

All the momentum was squarely with the French when Zidane went off and head-butted his way to a red card. There was time for one or two more probin attacks, the Italians were clearly on their last legs. What better opportunity to drive the dagger home by setting up a scoring chance for one of your team-mates?

Instead we have the undignified display Zidane put on. Instead we have Zidane taking all the wind out of the sails of the French, robbing them of their best chance to set up a score, their best penalty taker in case the game goes to PKs (and yeas Oh8ch, it is a lousy way to end a game, plain lousy).

I'm sure in the fullness of time we shall hear all about how Zidane's manhood, or mother was being bad-mouthed. But really, can't a pro keep his cool, for once, and especially when it is vitally important?

Very, very sad way for Zidane to end his career. Very sad indeed. It robbed a gripping game of the generally high level of sportsmanship on display. Frankly, he should of known better, much better.

I agree with what you're saying, and I was amazed at what Zidane did, especially considering the circumstances. But I'm sure there have been hundreds of times when pros have kept their cool in similar situations; it's just that when they do, most of us are never even aware of what was being said on the field.

Just think what a different legacy he would have had if his header a few minutes earlier hadn't been saved on a fine play by Buffon. He could have had two straight game-winners - and he clearly would have received the Golden Ball tomorrow. Instead he'll be remembered as as an idiot who lost his head and delivered one of the most blatant cheap shots ever.

There are better ways to get a guy without getting kicked out.

Step on his hands, , tough tackle from the side, the toe of my Addidas into his nuts...but head but him in the open infront of the refs??? Who does he think he is, Bo Bo Brazil???

What a dumb ass.

I watched most of the match. Was impressed by the ball handling, especially guys who could head the ball thrity, forty yards up the field acurrately. Left with more questions than answers:

1. Why carry, what 25?, on a team if you can only make three substitutions. Let them sub like our HS kids... speed up the game, cut down the injuries, get the paramedics off the field.

2. CONTINUOUS ACTION! Not true. Continuous clock running, but hardly continuous action.

3. IMO NBA basketball would be better if they took away hand checking, called palming and steps. Soccer would be better if they allowed substitutions and took away the tripping and diving that stifles offensive play.

Would I watch it again. In the summer, when my choices are the Deads, er Reds, and Pholding Phil? Probably.
