Here's my take on the game early in the week. This is subject to change as I unrealistically raise my hopes that Wisconsin has a chance in this game.
QB: OSU would be prudent to absolutely load the box and force Stave to beat them. He has really struggled against even mediocre opponents (Purdue). His release is slow, his footwork is bad, and he stares down his targets. If he struggles, don't be surprised to see ACL-less super-super-senior Curt Phillips get some time. Stave will need to have a stellar game if the Badgers are to win.
RB: The backfield for UW is very good. While James White is the listed starter, Melvin Gordon is the real star. He put on a lot of muscle from last year and has exceptional balance, vision, and speed. Freshman Corey Clement is a more-than capable fill-in and may get some carries to spell both White and Gordon.
WR/TE: Compounding Stave's problems is the fact that he doesn't have anyone to throw to other than Jared Abbrederis. TE Jacob Pedersen sprained his MCL against Purdue. That's a big blow. Both Abbrederis and Pedersen are excellent down-field blockers.
OL: To be honest, the offensive line is not as good as in year's past. They struggled in the first half against a pretty good ASU d-line. It's a young line that will have their hands full against OSU's front seven.
DL: Wisconsin has switched to a 3-4 scheme under the new coaching staff this year. NT Beau Allen needs to draw double teams to free up the linebackers. Defensive ends Pat Muldoon and Ethan Hemer seem like they have struggled with the transition.
LB: There is added emphasis on the linebacking corps with the switch to the 3-4. OLB Brendan Kelly is an awkward fit in his new position and got burned trying to cover the quicker ASU backs on wheel routes. Ethan Armstrong starts opposite of Kelly and is solid if not spectacular. The inside linebackers have played very well this year. Derek Landisch and Conor O'Neill have rotated and both have been pleasant surprises. Chris Borland is in his final year and is a handful.
Secondary: This is a young unit. CB Sojourn Shelton is a true freshman but starts regardless. He has had some growing pains so far but also has two interceptions. The other cornerback, junior Peniel Jean, also got hurt against Purdue but should be back this week. SS Dezmen Southward has had some mental lapses (particularly against ASU) but is a sure, hard-hitting tackler. FS Michael Caputo has been another surprise and is assignment-sure.
TL;DR version: Wisconsin will need to play a nearly flawless game offensively to beat OSU at night in the Shoe. My prediction: 34-21 OSU.
