Yes, I know it is an arbitrary date to measure, but I saw this and thought it interesting, since FSU is heading south again this year. Either this year or next we may be 1 and 2, in whatever order. That ain't bad guys and gals.

Sure... dream on! Word among the experts is that TSUN and ND are gonna win 86 games each this coming year, so watch out!!!!1!!2! :tongue2:

It's weird reading a statistic that contains Ohio State without hearing about how we're been blown out in consecutive title games. I'm not even sure what to do!

In all seriousness, that is a cool stat. I'm not really surprised. Wonder where media-darling USC is?

Do you have a link? I'd like to see a bigger list if there is one. :)

Since it goes all the way back to 1990, thought I'd add a little history to the conference affiliations:

1 Florida State -ACC (Joined the ACC after the 1990 season, were an independent prior to that)
2 Florida -SEC
3 Ohio State -B10
4 Miami-Florida -ACC (Independent in 1990. Big East through 2003. ACC in 2004.)
5 Nebraska -B12 (Member of the Big 8 until it expanded to the Big 12 in 1996.)
6 Tennessee -SEC
7 Michigan -B10
8 Texas -B12 (Member of the Southwest Conference until 1996.)
9 Boise State -WAC (Member of the Big Sky (I-AA) through 1995. Member of the Big West until 2001.)
10 Virginia Tech -ACC (Independent in 1990. Big East through 2003. ACC in 2004.)

Interesting to note that from 1990 to 2008, Ohio State was .733 under Cooper, but .820 under Tressel. Florida was .813 under Spurrier, .621 under Zook, and .795 under Meyer. The point I'm trying to make is that both schools had coaches that significantly underperformed compared with their predecessors and/or successors, yet still remain at the top of the list.

That's pretty remarkable, when you think about it. Both schools have had periods of 'under achieving' (hard to call .733 under achieving, but it really was) yet still have won frequently enough to remain at the top. I find that very telling.

Since we're using arbitrary ranges, let's use:

  1. 1993-2007,
  2. 1994-2007, or
  3. 1995-2007
All three of those ranges have OSU at #1 and Florida at #2.

For that matter, every range ending with 2007 and starting with the years 1992-1997 had OSU at #1. Before that, in 1991; FSU was #1, OSU was #2 and Florida #3.

Gee, I wonder why 1990 was chosen?

Does it really matter what the rankings are at the top? The bottom line is that all three of those programs have been remarkably successful over that span. Who gives a damn about 1/100th of a winning percentage point? 1990 is pretty much as good as any of those other ranges.

Looks to me like Gator took a period that flattered both teams a bit. Here are the accumulated winning percentages of the top team, Ohio State and Florida, and TSUN and Notre Dame.

You have to go back 30 years before Notre Dame is in the top 15. :slappy: "America's team" is now outside the top 50 teams during the last five years. Uh, wow!

2003-2007

USC#1 89.7%, Ohio State #5 82.5%, TSUN #16 73.0%, Florida #17 71.9%, Notre Dame #56, 54.1%

1998-2007

Boise State #1 81.1%, Ohio State #3 78.4%, TSUN #9 74.4%, Florida #10 73.2%, Notre Dame #40 58.7%

1993-2007

Ohio State #1 79.5% , Florida #2 77.7%, TSUN #8 74.2%, Notre Dame #29 62.2%

1988-2007

Free Shoes #1 79.8, TSUN #4 76.0, Florida #5 75.9%, Ohio State #7 75.3%, Notre Dame #14 68.3%

1983-2007
Miami (Fla) #1 79.8%, TSUN #4 75.4%, Florida #5 75.0%, Ohio State #7 74.7%, Notre Dame #19 65.8%

1978-2007
Nebraska #1 79.2%, TSUN #4 75.3%, Ohio State #5 74.9%, Florida #12 70.6%, Notre Dame #18 65.6%

1973-2007
Nebraska #1 78.9%, TSUN #2 77.6%, Ohio State #3 77.1%, Florida #14 69.9%, Notre Dame #16 68.9%

1968-2007
Nebraska #1 79.5%, TSUN #2 76.7%, Ohio State #3 76.2%, Florida #15 68.7%, Notre Dame #13 69.5%
