William Johnson (DB ttun)

Let's be honest here. The Bucks DB performance in 2020/2021 didn't do them favors for recruiting.

Let's employ an equal amount of intellectual honesty, look at the unique circumstances of last year and compare them to all the previous years of Coombs DB developmental track record.

One place has a track record of making DB's 1st round NFL draft picks. Their coaching staff is stable and prospects for being with your son for the next 3-5 years are very good.

The other place has a head coach who was actively looking to leave last year but couldn't get a job so he's back on a dead man walking, school friendly firing contract. Said deadman walking has a new DB coach with zero track record who will be gone with the deadman. As a collective the past 6 years they have done nothing but turn highly touted recruits into underperforming college players and lower round NFL draft picks.

track record of good development vs track record of poor development or no track record at all
coaching staff/program stability vs coaching staff/program chaotic disarray
winning program/culture vs losing program/revenge tour culture

They can see this as clearly as anyone else and still chose the latter of all those comparison points. Let's be honest here indeed; this kids old man just screwed him over. OSU will be fine. His son is the one who is going to pay the price.

How did his dad screw him over? It's pretty cut and dry, dad(and I believe mom too) went to scUM and want their son there too. And not at their biggest rival. No amount of OSU success will stop that. I doubt Chris Spielman, Eddie George, Archie Griffin, Keith Byars, Pete Johnson, etc etc would willfully send their kids to scUM. Hell, Antonio Winfield Jr. had a ScUM offer and chose Minny, and im sure his pops encouraged him to go anywhere BUT scUM. It is what it is, its a win that we were even in the fight this long. But we were never really going to land Johnson.

Whew sometimes that’s a really big ask

in the sense of his potential NFL earnings for starters

I understand why they do it but that doesn't change the effect on the kid. Forget Speilman and all that, in this immediate moment, has a top shelf DB choosing tsun ever been as bad of a decision for his career as it could be right now?

Like I said, life has a way of keeping score of dumb decisions. OSU is going to be just fine. Will the kid? Doubt the old man even thinks like that but if he has a shred of honesty with himself, he should be.

Has he entered the transfer portal yet?

Hope he succeeds at life, but I agree w/Jax. Hard to call this a good decision football-wise. Maybe he's gifted enough (a la Dax Hill) to overcome the coaching he'll get. Either way, happy to add a few more L's to his name.

I'm completely with you when it comes to how his future may play out. It makes zero logistical sense to choose scUM over OSU, as far as when it comes to developing, playing in big collegiate games and winning them and then getting drafted. My point is, legacies rarely go to their rival schools. I would easily say that OSU is a distant 3rd on his list and he's probably choosing between scUM and USC. And I venture to say that his career could mirror DPJ's, unless he can find a way to be average at 20 different positions, then he could be a 1st or 2nd rounder like Peppers
