Freeman at SAM with his speed and coverage skills? Sorry, I don't see the staff moving an all-conference player from a position he's started at for two years. But, it wouldn't really bother me if I'm wrong. The coaches could pick the starters by pulling names out of a hat and it would still be a top 5 unit.

I do not think Freeman is any faster than Homan for one. Homan's first step is as fast as anyone on the team. This years starting line up for the LB's for the jersey scrimmage was; Freeman at the SLB/JL at MLB/and Homan at WLB. The jersey scrimmage is usually the ones against the ones. Couple that with Heacocks statement after the game: “Heacock also said they could go with Freeman at the SLB spot and put Homan at the WLB spot, if they decide that is a better fit."

I agree though the coaches have so many ways to go with this group but the three best we have is Homan, Freeman, and JL.

Word. I don't know enough about Homan to make a good argument. I think Freeman looks great at WILL, although he is heavier than he looks. Also liked Terry a lot in '06. If Homan deserves to play, I'm sure the coaches will make it so.

No augment here just posting things I have read. Never been a big fan of Terry though 17 tackle?s in 4 years not my idea of productive. After the coaches changed his number to 99 kind of tells the tell in my mind.

Terry's been banged up a lot. Saw spot time in '06 as a junior, missed entire '07. In his limited snaps at LB (was solid on ST), he showed an ability to get into the backfield. I think you're confusing him with Gibson on the jersey #. 99 would not be an eligible reciever, not good for FB.

Terry did in fact change his number to 99 this spring. Attached is a pic from the spring game. Beast!

Interesting note about the number eligibility, I thought he changed it from 55 to 99 so he could play fullback. You have a point about the number, it doesn't seem like it would be receiver eligible?

I'm pretty sure 99 is a receiver eligible number. IIRC, the only ineligible numbers are 50-79 (in college).

You are correct the coaches changed Terry's number to 99 so he would have a receiver eligible number. Terry may see some LB time this year, but my guess is he will be the starting FB for the Buckeyes this year.

My bad! Gibson is now #90.

I like all these LBers but I like Terry a lot. If you go back to the '06-'07 season, Terry actually went head to head with Homan and Grant for the 3rd LBer spot, and won. His jaw-jarring tackles against MSU set the tone for the wonderful defensive performance against physical MSU runners that afternoon and elevated the physical play of the defense to another level from that game on.

Here's how I see it:

Spitler and Sabino will fight for the MLBer spot next season. Too close to call.

Homan will take the SAM next season, but will play significant minutes at the position this season behind Terry. Sweat is the budding star here.

Rolle, Hines and Moeller will fight to replace Freeman, but all three could see significant time this season. Whoever plays the most will be the odds-on favorite.

Forgot a couple of points. Coaches have confidence in Terry's passrushing abilities. He has the size and speed to do it. Look back at Terry's high school film; the dude was a beast coming off the edge.

Secondly, Gibson is more of a LEO. I could see a couple of reasons for the coaches progressing him slowly, and it's not just the football part of it. He's got a lot of work in terms of mental development and rushing him to the stage too quick may be detrimental. You got to put the guys you trust on the field and Terry is that guy.

I think this position will see ALOT of player rotation. Sure Homan may be the starter but I see him splitting much of the time with at least a couple players my personal favorite being Rolle. We are going to have some fresh SAM's going against tired lineman in the 4th quarter.

I agree, this could be the most rotated position this year. We have the depth to rotate all over the feild, but the starters at most positions are simply too good to keep out. Fresh legs in 4th Qtr = Fresh legs in Nov.
