I like all these LBers but I like Terry a lot. If you go back to the '06-'07 season, Terry actually went head to head with Homan and Grant for the 3rd LBer spot, and won. His jaw-jarring tackles against MSU set the tone for the wonderful defensive performance against physical MSU runners that afternoon and elevated the physical play of the defense to another level from that game on.

Here's how I see it:

Spitler and Sabino will fight for the MLBer spot next season. Too close to call.

Homan will take the SAM next season, but will play significant minutes at the position this season behind Terry. Sweat is the budding star here.

Rolle, Hines and Moeller will fight to replace Freeman, but all three could see significant time this season. Whoever plays the most will be the odds-on favorite.

In 06-07 you have to remember Homan was just a freshman and hurt his first two years, Grant was in his first year also, while he did not start Homan still had more tackles than Terry did that year. Homan had 38 tackles and Terry had 17. I also think you may see Freeman play the SAM spot and keep Homan at the WLB. But the three starters will be Freeman, JL, and Homan these three are just too good to keep off the field.

Spitler will start next year at one of the LB spots.

Rolle, Hines, and Moeller size is key for these guys. Just can not see them as every down LB's at 215-220. I agree all will see time.

I'm pretty sure 99 is a receiver eligible number. IIRC, the only ineligible numbers are 50-79 (in college).

This is correct. Page 29 in this pdf file has the guidelines for jersey numbers.

And you've gotta love the diagram that's true to the formation for which the 'fullback' got his name.

ncaapublications.com/Uploads/PDF/2007_football_rules

SECTION 4. Players and Playing Equipment

Recommended Numbering

ARTICLE 1. It is strongly recommended that offensive players be numbered
according to the following diagram that shows one of many offensive
formations (Rule 1-4-2-b):

80-99...70-79...60-69....50-59....60-69...70-79...80-89
...O.........O........O..........O..........O.........O........0
..End....Tackle...Guard..Snapper..Guard..Tackle....End

....................................O..................................
.........................Quarterback..........................
.....O....................................................O...........
Halfback......................Backs 1-49........Halfback.....

....................................O..................................
...........................Fullback......................

Players' Numbering

ARTICLE 2. a. All players shall be numbered 1 through 99. Any number
preceded by zero ("0'") is illegal [S23].

b. On a scrimmage down, at least five offensive players on the scrimmage
line shall be numbered 50 through 79 (Cont'd) ...

i voted moller, but that's more of a reflection that i think he should see as much time as we can get him. i was impressed with him during the spring game, and if he's half as fast as people say he is, he could be a huge asset against certain teams.

i personally think it's going to be SAM by committee until someone emerges as the leader, and my guess is that'll eventually be homan. although i really wish rolle would be on the field more often so i could shout "HI GUYS.ITS BRIAN ROLLE" every time he hits someone

lol can the man compliment Curtis Terry? I'm sure he's aware that Ross was a freshmen in 2006. Homan is talented and has a great future ahead of him, at the same time some feel there are still plays to be made by Terry at Ohio State. He seems to be a forgotten man because he hasn't seen the field and tOSU is super loaded with young studs at LB. I mean I had to chuckle when you commented that you haven't been "a big Terry fan" over the years because we have barely seen him in the first place. Unless you've been to every practice, I really don't see how you can be that disappointed with his productivity and progression as a football player coming in as a raw, virtual unknown from Glenville. (maybe your Homan fanaticism talking?)

Looking back at his career he probably should've redshirted. But was among several freshmen that were allowed to play following a dreadful three game losing streak in 2004. It was the Indiana game and I remember it well because it was Troy Legend's first start and there were so many unfamiliar numbers running around on special teams. He continued on special teams in 2005, Ohio State had a good linebacker or two in those years. Terry finally broke the two deep in 2006 and played well. He was the most physical linebacker on the squad that year, and just had a presence about him. When he meets guys in the hole they usually go back and hard..plus he gets to the QB in a hurry with major attitude.

Every Championship team needs a tough, gritty, nasty, and underrated guy among the playmakers willing to do the hard work on every play...a Terry, a Schlegel, a Reynolds (minus the choke job:biggrin:). I wanna see that vintage Ohio State physicality that weighs on running backs by the time the 4th rolls around. ( I think Hester, Juice and Mendenhall are sill running on the Bullets :( )

Like OSUBuckeyes4life, I think they should split time. Imo Terry would have been on the field a lot last season if not for the injury. Now having a bunch of young hungry lions breathing down his back could very well change things, but I think he's stilll pretty dang hungry himself :) I want this kid on my side... :osu:

1) Terry is a Buckeye so let's not try to make me out as hating him we just have better LB's in front of him.

2) That said Terry has been at OSU for 4 years and has 17 tackles. He started all but 2 or 3 games in 06 sorry I do not call that productive. We have true freshman and red shirt freshman that played backup and have more tackles after 1 year on the field.

3) Terry will play some LB, but Homan, Moeller, Hines, and Rolle are just flat better LB's. The coaches must agree or they would not be trying Terry at FB and changing his number.

4) Terry would not have been on the field that much last year Grant won the job before Terry got hurt. Terry would have seen some time sure but Grant took the spot. As for Homan yea I think him and JL are the two best tackling LB's on the team. But I just repeated what the coaches said after the spring game, and all I have read sounds like Homan will be a starting LB. Let's do this let's compare the two at the end of their careers at OSU. It will not be close. Heck let's compare stats now after Homan's 1 year and 3 games and Terry's 3 year's of availability to play.

5) Terry looked great and FB in the spring game. OSU has needed a good FB and Terry looks to be the man.

i'm one of the two people that voted 'other.' with the way that offenses have spread out recently, we're in the nickel more and more. probably like 30-35% last year off the top pf my head. (aside: that's the beauty of the spread option: it gets you into 'pass defenses' with spread formations, and then runs in the lanes that are created by spreading out the D.) the way i see it is this: JL and Freeman basically never leave the field. the other guys rotate in as the situation dictates...

BTW, i know they "honored" #99 for Bill Willis this past year, I'm surprized to see someone given the number so soon. Anyone know the official rules regarding honored #s?

Ran across a link that kind of answers this on 11W (links to coachtressel.com). According to this, the #s of the Heisman winners plus Harley are truely retired, never to be worn again. The article was written before Willis' honoring, so that's still unclear. It also lists the criteria used for consideration.
