Homan, with heavy doses of Sabino (the next All American LB at Ohio State). JL, Freeman, Homan, and Sabino are the four best LB's on the roster right now. Rolle and Gibson need to see plenty of time as well, and each can bring a great "change of pace" both in terms of speed and attitude. Terry is also a role player with attitude ... but he doesn't have the athleticism of Gibson and Rolle. Moeller, Hines, Spitler, and Sweat need to make names for themselves before the 2009 guys arrive ... or they might be career special teamers. I think that Sweat will do so ... but I'm not so sure about the other three.

I think Sweat is going to be pretty good. He probably won't start till he's a junior, but he looked pretty good in the spring game. I agree with you about Hines and Moeller though. A lot of good players are coming in too.

The coaches seem to really love Hines and Spitler. I don't think the '09 guys will threaten them much.

I have heard nothing but praise from the coaches about Homan, but I can't recall seeing him make any big plays. Anyone have a Homan moment that might jar my memory?

That may have to do with the fact he's barely played. But he made some plays against Akron and had an int against Northwestern his freshman year. The thing that stuck out was he usually met the ball carrier at or behind the line of scrimmage.

So many of the Lb's could have it said " how are you going to keep him off the field ? "
Sabino looked so good at the spring game, yet we have all the others ahead of him. Rolle and others all looked like hell on wheels at times. Some of these kids will have to wait until their Jr. or Sr. year to play steady and
they are all capable of starting at any time.

Homan has proven in his short playing time that he doesnt miss tackles. One of the best things I ever heard someone say about AJ Hawk is that "once he hits you, you're down." Same thing with Homan without AJ's otherworldly athleticism, yet. Homan's frame is perfect for a LB and his nose for the ball sets him apart.

Curtis Terry brings the wood every single play. He's built a little top heavy in my opinion which could be a negative in playing the pass. He is built perfectly for a FB which is probably one of the reasons the coaches have him in there. Curtis is perfect for the goal line, offense or defense. A total battering ram. For an every down LB'er you have to go with Homan starting out.

Thaddeus Gibson might just see some time at OLB during a flex defense period where we switch from 3-4 to 4-3 looks with him rushing the passer alot or picking up coverage out of the backfield to use his speed and height.

Rolle just needs a little more seasoning. His height hurts him a little but his heart is maniacal. He hits like no one else and they stay hit.

The younger guys have to wait their turn. Thats the way it is at Ohio State and thats the way its going to stay. Theres so much freakin talent on this defense that its unreal! I dont remember a deeper defense ever and the classes just keep pouring in. You gotta love it!

Couldn't agree more! LB at OSU has to be the hardest unit to crack in college football. With the players that have already committed thru 2009, we'll have the best LBs in the country riding the pine until they're juniors. Not only do we get top shelf talent, but they get to learn from outstanding upperclassmen and Coach Fickell.

Good call. I'm watching my tape of the '06 NW game right now. Homan made a nice read on the QB for the pick, although you would think Bacher would have noticed Homan locked on to him. Homan getting injured may have been a blessing in disguise. No one was going to unseat Laurinaitis, Freeman, and Grant last year. Hope RH can bounce back and see some good playing time this year. Still think Terry fits the mold of a SAM more than Homan, who seems more like a MIKE or WILL.

Random thoughts after re-watching 2006 NW game...Is it just me, or does Bob Greise sound like he chugs a bottle of cough syrup before each broadcast?...nickname for Jay Richardson: Crazy Eyez...Tyrelle Sutton is real good...Before C.J. Bacher was QB for NW, he made a name for himself as the purple Power Ranger...I watched this game with my usual crew (saw every game from middle of 2002 thru UM 2006 with same crew in same building, two apts.), when they showed the NW cheerleaders crowded around the camera, my friend said, "Ugh, what's up, shovel face?". I immediately knew which one he was referring to (1st row, 2nd from left).

Big tackle on third down in the Texas game, early first quarter in a scoreless game.

Indiana in 06 last man between kick returner and endzone. Ross JACKED HIM UP.

I'm not sure but I think he also had a pair of INT's in the Northwestern game in 06. I definetly remember one but two just sounds right.

Agreed. I could always tell when Homan was out there. I could only remember seeing him plant and drive back a running back at the line of scrimmage.

I like to see that.

Homan.

I think Freeman will start at SLB and Homan will start at WLB with JL at MLB. The coaches think this may be the best way to go. Terry will see most of his time at FB.

Freeman at SAM with his speed and coverage skills? Sorry, I don't see the staff moving an all-conference player from a position he's started at for two years. But, it wouldn't really bother me if I'm wrong. The coaches could pick the starters by pulling names out of a hat and it would still be a top 5 unit.
