Jeff, were FSU's vacated wins reflected as "vacated" or "W"s?
Vacated. After FSU's wins were vacated, they had a 2-6 record in 2006 and an 0-6 record in 2007, which means that they had -10 net wins in my formula. In addition, I did not give them credit for bowl appearances in either year (normally they would have received 1 point for each minor bowl loss). Note that their Music City Bowl loss to Kentucky in 2007 still counts as a loss in the net win formula. In sum, the vacated wins cost Florida State 16 points (12 net wins, +3 Emerald Bowl win, +1 Music City Bowl loss).

Similarly, Alabama lost 25 prestige points as a result of vacated games from 2005 to 2007.

On September 29, 2007, Florida State and Alabama played a game. Florida State "won" 21-14, but had to vacate the win; if Alabama had won, then they would have had to vacate the win as well. That's southern football for you....

LordJeffBuck, thanks very much for all the time you've put into this. I was the one who asked for "the last 50 years" stats, and wow, you sure went way beyond that! Very interesting reading for me, and I'm going to link this thread to a Husker board that I frequent as well.

Thanks again! :)

Looks like this will be the last decade Notre Dame will be listed in the top 15. Nebraska will probably move up, now that they don't have Kansas State to push them around anymore.
When LJB updates this in ten years, unless Michigan gets their heads out of their asses, they may not be in the top 15 either. USC will drop for obvious reasons, and I can see Miami dropping quite a bit also.

Interesting that the distance between teams varies so much. Number 1 and 2 are practically tied, while the distance between number 7 and 8 is around 80 points.

I am in the process of recalculating the prestige of other top programs, but I believe that Ohio State and Oklahoma will place 3rd and 4th respectively, behind Alabama and Notre Dame, and ahead of Southern Cal, Michigan, Nebraska, and Texas.

Ohio State's most prestigious player is obviously Archie Griffin, who has 74 points (2 Heisman, 2 Walter Camp, Maxwell, 2 unanimous All American).

Oklahoma's most prestigious player is quarterback Jason White, who has 47 points (Heisman, Maxwell, 2 Davey O'Brien, unanimous All American).

Ohio State's most prestigious year was 2002 (138 points), followed by 2014 (127.5 points), 1968 (127 points), and 1942 (113 points).

Oklahoma's most prestigious year was 1975 (146 points), followed by 2000 (143.5 points), 1985 (138 points), 1956 (133 points), and 1955 (127 points).

I've tweaked the formula a bit, giving more prestige to national championships and Heisman Trophies.

*A note on national championship points: A pre-poll undisputed national championship (not relevant for either of these two teams) is worth 50 points. A poll era undisputed national championship is worth 100 points. Split national championships are pro-rated according to a proprietary formula.
