Which CB Will Replace Fox?

Hard not to play Ginn Jr. both ways, he wants to and we know the Defensive Coaches are hoping JT lets him. If he goes both ways it's a risk for sure but it would definitely increase his chances of bringing home the Hiesman.

HB

JT isn't going to play someone just to increase his chance at the Heisman. Ginn has proven himself far too valuable on offense to take him off offense, and having him play both ways only wears him out and doubles his chances of getting hurt.

Think if it this way...which side of the ball gains more from his presence? We already have a solid defense without Ginn, but our offense isn't near as potent without Ginn.

haha These "Ginn to CB" threads are almost as much fun as "Zwick vs. Smith". :tongue2:

Personally, I think that we're all going to need to put our vCash where our vMouths are and wager this thing out.

How about this vBet? Which happens first -- JamO or Ginn taking a rep at CB? Or this one -- JamO or Ginn STARTING a game at CB?

Man, I wish I were a vBookie. :(

There is/was already a vBet going on about Ginn playing on defense next season. There also was one on him playing on defense in the Alamo Bowl...needless to say I won some vCash on that.

Outside of his value on offense, another reason I can't see Ginn at corner is our defensive scheme. We've always used a good cover corner and good tackling boundary corner... the later is certainly not Ginn and Yobouty is a lock at the other, or at least good enough to not jeaprodize Ginn. Maybe SirJo backed up by Shaun on one side with Yobouty backed up by Brandon on the other until Jamario gets his feet wet.

That statement is 100% accurate, but it has nothing to do with the situation. Teddy wants to play both ways and more importantly his father wants him to play both ways.

I think you are drastically discounting the presence of TG1 in this situation. If you want the Glenville gate to stay open, you don't upset the gatekeeper.

Safties, safties and more safties

Interesting how nobody mentions Brandon Underwood, Shaun Lane or Roberts... why not?
Agreed. There's still plenty of time for Lane and Underwood to show there abilities. However you have to wonder about Roberts, that guy has yet to do anything and he's a junior to be.

Being able to cover a player out on a island takes a different type of athlete. I don't know, I have some doubts about the depth of our TRUE cornerbacks.

Listed as CB
Youboty Great cover corner. Solid and reliable
Ginn. Great athlete who leaves little doubt he could play corner. Only drawback may be that it might take him a few games into the season to make the adjustment. But he can do it.
EJ. Attitude?? Consistency?? These are both legitimate questions based on his history and this is his last year.
Roberts Has he seen the field, not including special teams?
B. Underwood and Lane See above. I guess Lane played CB in high school and was projected as a CB. But if I remeber correctly Underwood was projected as a saftey, can he play corner?

Listed as Safties
Whitner. Great athlete who can lay the wood. He was projected as a corner coming out of Glenville but was moved to safty (probably to see the field faster, he's good). He probably could move to CB and suceed.
Salley, Everett and Mitchell All three are safties, end of story.
Welch and Patterson Listed as safties and were projected as safties coming out of high school. There's still plenty of time for these guys to develop into corners if not safty, but they may be naturally suited for safty.

Coming in (way to early to tell)
O'Neal Great athlete with a big body for a CB. People have brought up the game against Manningham, but who doesn't have a bad game now and then. The only problem I can forsee for O'Neal is he may OUTGROW the CB position.
Jenkins Projected as a corner I think. What position did he play in HS? I heard safty.
Amos, Hartline and Washington WR, Safty, or CB? I've only heard Amos mentioned as a possible CB.

Brandon Underwood definitely came in as a CB. The skinny on his was the potential was great maybe even moreso than EJ. Will he live up to that potential? Thats a good question. Will he even be at tOSU? Thats an even better question.

I think moving Whitner to the boundary would work fine if no other CB steps up. We have decent depth and skill at Safety. The best case scenario obviously is EJ gets it together and becomes the player we all hoped he would and Whitner stays at safety with Jamario in at nickel.

Worry Not

We have an overload of talent at safety. We will not hurt at this position.
If we need talent at CB, move whoever it takes. Salley and Y' are glued.
We will find enough talent to put effective players at the other two DB positions.

We are absolutely loaded at Safety. Everett, Mitchell, and Welch can all come in and there is little dropoff.

I know people are gonna wanna kill me for saying this but I want to see Tony Gonzales to try going both ways. Tony is a big play receiver and if he only sees limited time at WR we will still be fine because of all the other stud WR's we have. Tony has the speed and Height to hang with any WR.

I guess it comes down to who steps up...last year it was Youbooty.

I'm with Mili Ginn is too valuable on offense and ST too get him hurt playing corner.

Ginn and VCash

I would play Ginn full time on offense & kick returns as a first priority and then let him play defense as the third option, probably in passing situations.

His pass coverage skills are unsurpassed. At the big-33 game when the score tightened up in the 4th quarter, here came Ginn and that was the last time the PA QBs even looked at that side of the field.

He needs to prove himself in run coverage - maybe that's why he switched positions after training camp this past year.

Where is this VCash "thing" explained. Ginn will play some defense next year:-)

I agree with you 100% brutus, give the guy a look and see what happens. He's an impressive ballplayer.

Gosh, the only problem with replacing Fox is which talented player lines up at which positions. Nice problem to have - what a deep team everywhere!

Teddy wants to play both ways and more importantly his father wants him to play both ways.
His father is also a football coach which means he knows that you put your players in the best position to help your team win. Also as a coach he knows that the wishes and desires of a father cannot effect how the coach plays his athletes. It is a team sport, maybe the ultimate team sport, and a coach like TGI knows this.

I think you are drastically discounting the presence of TG1 in this situation. If you want the Glenville gate to stay open, you don't upset the gatekeeper.
I think you are drastically discounting the type of man TG1 happens to be. He is not vindictive and petty as your statement implies. He is a great figure in Cleveland, a father figure for many of the young men he coaches. His accomplishments off the field with these young men are actually greater than his accomplishments on the field. A great man who fully understands the job of a football coach, and also understands the place of a parent of a child who plays football, will not pressure JT in the way you imply, nor would he glose the pipeline from Glenville to OSU.

SirJo supposedly practiced for the Bowl game at CB. If he has the speed, then he has all the tools necessary to play CB. i would think a guy who showed that much open-field tackling ability would have to see the field somehow. He would have to be the best CB at run support.

The offensive coaches were quoted in interviews last year as saying they thought TG II would eventually end up on defense, and they were going to use him while they had him on Off. But i know Tressel is so impressed with his hands that maybe that has changed - plus of course he can change the game any time he touches the rock.

Ok it boils down to this...Is Teddy more valuable on offense or defense!!!!

Look at the staring defense with Teddy

CB: youbooty and Ginn
S: Whitner and Salley
LB: Hawk, Schlegel/D'Andrea, Carpenter
DE: Gholston and Kudla
DT: Pitcock and Green/Patterson

Nickle and Dime: Everett/ Mitchell/Welch

Who in the hell are you gonna pick on in that secondary:biggrin:

If we move Ginn to defense we need 2 more WR's to step up Big Time. I was counting on Dukes but that doesn't look good.

Lyons, Hall, and another WR need to make an impact.

The next question is how many offensive plays does Ginn get if he plays both ways?

I will admit that is a scary looking defense with Ginn at corner...maybe better than 2002
