It's mind boggling that we continue to do the same thing week in and week out and expect to stop teams. Sounds like the definition of insanity. I feel Roby has checked out. Grant is coming along and I think will be a good one by the time it is all said and done. The rest of the secondary is lost. Scheme and coaching definitely has to be questioned. I am curious as to why Vrabel coaches the DL and Fick coaches LBs. Seems like it would be the reverse.

I don't understand why Fickell is the one getting the blame here. He has almost nothing to do with the DBs or the secondary scheme. Hell, in his interim year our defense wasn't even that bad. That's the only reason we were able to keep it close despite only throwing it twice a game
Fickell coaches the LB who have been liabilities in pass coverage and really haven't grown any the passed two years.

Heacock coached that defense when he was HC.

There is plenty of blame for the Defense.. Outside of Vrable

Luke has been the LB coach since 2004.

They are supposed to break on the receivers when the ball is leaving the QB, not wait until after the receiver has it. They are not anticipating or reacting, and they are not making plays. The second Iowa TD is a prime example. The receiver was not at the goal line, he was in the back of the end zone, and neither DB even moved to cover him, or looked to see where he was after he ran past them.

You might be right, but your example is wrong. I was at the game, and I was watching that side of the defense during the play. Iowa had trips and ran a levels play, like the last one mentioned in the article, only the inside receiver went out instead of in. The defenders all jumped the short guys, and the backside defender didn't see the deeper route coming towards him. It was the exact same play that Miller overthrew Fields on against Northwestern.

And has done a good job when we've had the talent. I don't really place much/any of this on Luke...Shazier is our only LB really. Grant is coming along ok but Perry is underperforming and none of the other LBs are ready to play. Once our talent is developed more, Luke will be fine.

However, Withers and Combs are going to need some serious talking to. Change the scheme to be more aggressive and even if we give up some big plays, at least opponents won't methodically dissect us and keep our offense off the field forever. And I am still scratching my head not seeing Vonn Bell out there...we need to take some risks at this point. The coaches keep saying "we make a scheme to win games and we are" but that is no thanks to our defense. If our offense ever has an average night and this defense keeps playing like this, we WILL lose.

I am aware of that, but thought with the positions that each played in their career it would make sense that it would be the opposite. Minimally, maybe a good switch.
Might be, but ultimately I don't think Luke is doing a poor job at coaching the linebackers. I disagree with the other post (not made by you) that said that the linebacker play has not improved since last year. I think it has, especially in fundamentals. Last year I saw our linebackers bounce off of opposing players, this year, I see them wrapping up and making the play. As for them being a "liability in pass coverage," these are guys whose strength lies in stopping the run. Outside of the first half against Iowa, they have done a pretty good job at it. Ultimately, if we are going to blame coaching for our defensive woes, it falls on the position coaches for the defensive backs.

This is basically what I am trying to say. I think there is a lack of talent in the secondary compared with past teams. I think it is made worse by poor position coaching - whether it is Withers or Combs, I really don't care, but there is no development going on there. No scheme is going to work to defend the pass that lives up to the Ohio State standard, until the people who are responsible for the secondary, the coaches and players included, get with the program, or are replaced.

Withers is supposed to be assistant head coach.

I'm with both of you. There were some comments earlier regarding the communication and ability to diagnose plays from the LB position. I was curious with Vrabel's playing experience in the NFL and time with Belichump if he might bring a different perspective to the position?

The defense hasn't lived up to expectations, but it's performed sufficiently for us to win the last 19 games in a row. So I'm not sure the performance of our defense is really as bad as we think it is.

The 2013 defense is bad (the back 7 specifically). The offense is just good enough to overcome it. The front 4 is quite good (first half of Iowa aside) so I could see an argument for "not as bad as we think" (whatever the definition of that is) but using team wins to rationalize the overall poor defensive play is disingenuous imo.

As with Bollman/Tressel offenses the team wins in spite of the 2013 defense, not because of it.

The Buckeyes rank 79th in passing yards allowed and 71st in passing efficiency defense. The yards allowed could be rationalized as a the offense choosing to pass because the run defense is stout, but the passing efficiency ranking indicates that opponents are choosing to pass because the Bucks' pass defense is mediocre to poor.

I voted for both talent and coaching. I don't know why but I'm just not a fan of anyone in our back 7 other than shazier. Count me in the crowd that is counting down the days when mike mitchell is running down people and when we have someone in our secondary that is taller than 6 foot and heavier than 200.

In saying that though our defense more importantly needs someone that is known to be a defensive mind and a known commodity. No more co coordinators go out and get someone that can get everyone on the same page. So far I'm most underwhelmed with withers and coombs as far as getting their groups to perform. Particularly withers.

When every game the commentators point out our excessive cushion on defense and point out how this is confusing because we have better speed than almost anyone, then you know its pathetic. Very disappointed in our defense now for two years. Ill be HEATED if we are stuck with the same garbage for next year.
