I'm in the same boat as Jake. Lost both grandmothers in the 90s, and I lost my mom this year. It falls on me to cook for the major holidays now, and I wish I'd had more time to learn from them. My mom's mom was the eldest of 13 kids, and the cooking duties fell on her at a young age. She was an absolute master, but of course never wrote any recipes down.
Christmas at Dad's was ribeyes grilled over charcoal, garlic mashed potatoes & gravy, fresh bread, a simple tossed salad, cornbread stuffing and the typical crudites like carrots, olives, pickles, etc.
The in-laws wanted a rehash of Thanksgiving, so it was more turkey, stove-top stuffing, cheesy beans, etc.
