NYB, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you should NOT pay off your mortgage if you come into money. House debt is good debt.
I'd pay off my pesky HELOC, take a vacation, and invest the rest. I'm afraid 1mil. isn't enough to retire on these days. :(
