I think they gotta atleast get to the final four to be a "success". I mean they're the #1 seed, and the #1 ranked team in the country, so they should be able to get out of their region if they play well. After that point, it becomes a different game.

This is right on the money.... sort of.

I guess I agree with everyone else who says that the season is already a success... no doubt about that.

I think maybe my feeling is that to make it MORE successful we need to go to the final four...

And... Thump is right to some extent that if Oden gets in trouble, we are vulnerable... but... the good news is...that we have enough weapons to beat any of those teams without him, too....

Elite 8 or better. Sweet 16 is pretty much expected, I think, so one more win would be good. Anything past Elite 8 requires a bunch of things to happen, that we can't say, "it didn't happen, so Ohio State was a huge let-down."

Of course, anything better would also count as a success to me.

Bingo. With all the hoopla of our recruiting class (Oden, Conley, Cook, etc.) and our success last season with lesser personnel, anything less than the Final Four is a disappointment in my mind. Hell, many pundits were already awarding us the national title for this year once that recruiting class signed their LOIs...

He played in the game but he did not play "huge role" in our win.

you ever seen that commercial where the guy's girlfriend says he is talking sports out of his ass? maybe you should watch more ESPNnews. check out these numbers and tell me Oden didn't play a huge role. This game was arguably his best to date at that point in the season.

Harris 9
Oden 24
Conley 16
Lewis 5
Harris 2

Now, back to your regularly scheduled program...

Anyone want to reconsider given that game yesterday?

I think that we saw the Buckeye team that excelled prior to Oden's return in the OT of that game vs. Xavier. We saw how well we function outside of waiting for Oden. While Conley was playing out of his mind I think we have value both with a big man and with out (i.e. not putting Terwilliger in to get Oden a break or when he is in foul trouble).

I know Matta wants to get Oden in but we also looked quite efficient without our big man. I think we become a little more fluid and able to produce the quick strike.

Nothing against Oden, just saying we are kind of a two-faced team where we can compete w/ a small or big lineup.

I think what happened was that Xavier's entire defensive plan was to take Oden out of the game. When he was out of the game, they were not prepared for the speed Ohio State brought to the floor. They were confused and, if you watch especially the last minutes the the regular time period, missing their defensive assignments badly.

We are quite the predictable team with Oden in the lineup and I think from time to time Matta needs to throw in our slash-and-dash offense to fatigue the other team and produce more turnovers. Then when Greg comes back in and possibly Hunter the other team is tired and trying to handle those two, forget it.

Back to the thread. I originally put Final Four but Elite 8 is pretty special also. The best team doesn't always win this thing, it comes down to who is better conditioned and whose hitting the big shots when they come. I think if we beat Tennessee this week, no one could ask for more in good conscience.

I agree with the contrasting styles. When he pulls Oden I don't think he should always throw Terwilliger in there unless the opponent has a big man who is having success on the offensive end. If nothing else, leave Othello in there to provide some semblance of defense while also allowing us to run the ball.
