What have you bought b/c of a commercial?

methomps pretty much nailed it. Advertising is not an exact science. It is hard to determine why people buy certain products. Ads are designed to work when you actually go shopping for that product. You dint necessarily say "I am buying this b/c of that commercial" You buy products b/c you recognize the brand or name, therefore you trust them, for some reason.

I am willing to bet almost everyone on this forum is wearing some type of advertisement right now....nike, levi, reebok, old navy, etc.

I have a little knowledge on this subject. I majored in Ad/PR in college.

SIDENOTE: My prof/advisor @ Marietta College wrote the campaign "Heartbeat of America" back in the 80s. He was also the cousin of Dorothy from Wizard of Oz....put that on the "I dont give-a-shit-meter" :tongue2:

I think everyone here has nailed it on the head. They don't care if you buy right now, but instead want something ingrained in your mind so that you will remember their product when you go shopping for any products.

Think about this.....what ad campaigns just pop into your head or do you remember that have become part of pop culture?

"where's the Beef?"

"Just for the Taste of it"

"Avoid the Noid"

Those are three long gone ad campaigns tat jump out just off the top of my head.

While this doesnt' exaclty answer the question, I always like the tin foil hat wearing folk... from Wikipedia:

The Noid (voiced by Pons Maar), was a claymation character in Domino's Pizza advertising in the 1980s. He was a villainous red-suited character who attempted to ruin Domino's pizzas, but was constantly thwarted. The Noid was created by the Will Vinton Studios, the studio that created the California Raisins.

In 1989, the "Noid" campaign was promptly pulled off the air after a man, Kenneth Lamar Noid, who thought the ads were a personal attack on him, held two employees of an Atlanta, Georgia Domino's restaurant hostage for over five hours. After forcing them to make him a pizza, Noid surrendered to police. Noid was charged with kidnapping, aggravated assault, extortion and possession of a firearm during a crime. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The Noid has made a cameo appearance in several Simpsons episodes.

Things I Bought a Result of a Commercial

Movie Tickets - well if you allow that a trailer is just an extended commercial. Seeing part of how the movie may look is useful.

Subscription to a magazine - say the teaser in the ad is a particularly nice consideration, for SI to cite an obvious example.

Soap - well not me, but certainly the missus.

In the meat department - whenever the good deals on steaks come up I'm out to the Krogers or Meijer - zero customer loyalty, choice of venue purely based on available value that week.

I like Krogers for the most part but when comparing their meat with Meijer's; Meijer's is just better. Krogers quality of beef is crap!

Olive Garden ads for the never ending pasta bowl, makes me want to go every time!
