What Brands Are You Loyal To?

So, knowing I have a - likely counterproductive - compulsion to always get a great deal, a certain regular contributor to this thread pointed out to me that the pound isn't trading all that well against the dollar. And if I could find a vendor in the UK to ship me a barbour jacket there would likely be a significant savings over the overpriced shit show that is Orvis.

Well, easier said than done for the places I could find, and while some jackets were available, the Barbour Classics were nearly impossible to find a store that would ship them.

Oh, but then, the miracle of Arbitrage! E-bay!

Got this guy last week (Waxed Beaufort Classic in Olive green) and got to wear it out in the woods on a windy 40 degree day yesterday for a 90 minute walk. Perfectly windproof - a quite warm if you keep moving and I had intended to wear it with my lightest merino sweater - but alas, it didn't make it in my bag for the trip. So, wore a heavier layer and started to sweat a little, actually.

Anyway, its a purpose made hunting jacket with game pockets and the whole deal, great construction, and certainly cut to shoulder a long gun. Handwarmer pockets could be a touch bigger, but they're for hands, not stuffing other shit in. Really nice jacket. Haven't got it rained on yet but I have no doubt the wax will perform as intended.

Also, quick shout out to Mora knives of Sweden.

Was out at a cabin over the weekend and there was no mention of a firepit. And I didn't want to mess with wood, and didn't bring a hatchet or axe (despite having many of both!). Turns out there was indeed a fire pit and they provided the wood. But there was no kindling

Well, smallest chunk, plus batoning with the second smallest chunk and a mora companion with a 4 inch blade.

Nice. You'll need a pair of Crockett & Jones boots now.

Yeah, Orvis is over priced (as is Patagonia) but I'm still using (or my daughter is) stuff from them bought in the 80s (not just the fishing gear but clothing). Been thinking about a Barbour coat for years. Might be time to pull the trigger.

Well I did go to Orvis to make sure I had the size right. I did throw them a Grant for some weight forward floating fly line. I'm not an animal.

And yeah the Christmas Patagonia order is being assembled for the girls. I'm only cheap when it comes to me.

I like jackets.

Have a Patagonia one my mom bought me roughly 35 years ago. It is now just used on days when I have to run the snowblower. Besides a broken zipper pull and some stains it is in decent shape.

Gore tex coat from LLBean. Found it one day on a super deal. Wear it in the rain and then as a top layer on those windy winter days in NE Ohio.

Picked up a Kuhl jacket last year. Great fit and lots of room in the shoulders, which is key for me.

Final favorite jacket is a Filson coat. Again, another great deal. Super jacket for cooler fall and spring days

One complaint I have is a lot of jacket manufacturers are getting rid of inside pockets. I've always used them to hold my wallet and cell phone.

I have a fleece lined field coat from LL Bean that's in its 20's. Problem with that thing is its use case Manitoba

Got it rained on today!

Not too shabby!

I've had a Patagonia jacket (nylon shell/fleece lining) for 25 years now--so old it might have actually been made in the US. Jacket still looks almost new and gets a lot of wear. Only thing I've ever had to do is have some of the fleece lining restitched. Incredible quality. I was ready to buy a parka from them last Winter and would have had I not stumbled into an amazing deal on a Marmot at REI (3 something for a 700 jacket).

We had steady rain all day yesterday, so I broke out the OG Border. Still great after 18 years (and $400 in repairs, which were my fault due to lack of rewaxing and wearing it out in too cold and too dry Chicago winters). I'll probably go with the Runal today if I'm out and about.

Well, about to head to the cheesy fake English pub to watch ENG/FRA, my jacket will have to do as my England supporter gear.

Wore this out into the wild today. Really great fabric and construction, super warm and stylish as fuck. Over the last two years, I've bought a bunch from Spier & Mackay, all real good quality and value. This started at 400 was 328 on sale and with a weekend flash sale, I paid 262 bones or clams or whatever you call them.

Probably Tommy Bahama. Have several dozen silk shirts (we get hot weather here), that are in various degrees of presentability. Stopped buying golf shirts (upwards of 80), just use for golf. Don't wear anything else, when a Tommy will do.....and yes at $175.00 they're more than a tad overpriced.
