I am about half way through this one, and I have gotta say that this is one of the best books ever! It's a classic IMO.

Well researched and argued....not to mention frightening. The scope is probably a little too expansive for anyone not having spent a lifetime studying Chinese politics and history, but the author (a journalist) does a good job of distilling everything down.

Bottom line: China is not our friend. They are not our partner. They are not even an investment opportunity. They are our ruthless competitor, and we hand them our manufacturing base at our own peril. What we've done is akin to--at the height of the cold war--having allowed our companies to transfer our manufacturing base to the Soviet Union because they promised to build things cheaper while eliminating any workplace safety or environmental regulations.

I haven't finished the book yet-it's a collection of short stories, but I can state that Ben Fountain is an insanely good author, w/ a unique take on Americans and the 3rd World. I just wish he made his stories longer.
