It has been a good read.

I believe you.

It's just one of those titles that elicits a juvenile giggle when you see a dude reading it (without minimizing the potential issues caused by bullying).

Anyone here familiar with the writings of H.P. Lovecraft? If so, where would be a good place to start with his works?

I'm looking for something new to read and thought his mythology might be interesting.

He's a fantastic writer.

Are you looking for compilations to buy or individual stories to start with? Most of his works are available online.

"Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy", LeCarre, yet again, probably because the 'major motion picture' is about to release in the next couple months. Of possible interest to Buckeye fans, I can't help but wonder if the SI/Dohrmann unnamed-source name 'Ellis' may have come from this book:

"Ellis, we're to call him, and we still do, don't we, even if we know his own name as well as our own." (p.22)

Finally finished Owen Meany.......now on to
perdidousa.jpg

Took a while, but finished Perdido Street Station last week. A bit of a slow starter and not an easy read, but a fantastic book. I need to find more Mieville.

Pretty blah. May check out The Gates before I write him off completely.

Super easy read, nothing particularly special about it, but still more perturbing than most suspense novels.

Three more to choose from for my next endeavor:

I'm a bit late to the Steven Erikson party but finally got sucked into his goddamn never ending series.

That (slow starter) is an understatement. I gave up about a 1/3 of the way through when I started it...then let it sit for a year before picking it up again (at the urging of friends).

If you can get through the dragging beginning it really does pay off.

The Scar is my favorite of his other novels. Iron Council is also good but Mieville's politics (he's an honest to god socialist) become too heavy handed in it.

It's a bit young for my taste...reminds me of the movie Mirrormask in a lot of ways. I do think it would make a fantastic movie, if done by the right folks. I'd love to see what the Henson Workshop would put together. Could be good animated, but I don't know who's out there that would do it well.

Yeah....I could appreciate that the first 3rd was well-written, but every single page was a struggle.....and then the cocoon opened and I couldn't put it down for the next couple days.

I'll have to dig those up...or see if the guy who lent me Perdido has any others.
