The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis

Very compelling book... story of an enormous black teenager rescued by a white couple, taught how to function in school/life, and groomed into a tremendous football prospect.

As a relevant sidestory, the book details the way Lawrence Taylor changed the game, from creating a need for a Left Tackle and the quick strike West Coast Offense (Walsh) to prevent his blindside assaults on QBs.

I'll steal a synopsis from another site:
When we first meet the young man at the center of this extraordinary and moving story, he is one of 13 children by a mother addicted to crack; he does not know his real name, his father, his birthday, or any of the things a child might learn in school.
He has the athleticism of Pace with no ability or desire to function in school or life. His new guardians will not rest until they help him come out of his shell, partially through sports.

Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon.

It reads like a book written brilliantly by someone who can perfectly mimick Pynchon but yet, somehow, is missing the point. I am not sure if that makes sense. I guess I could also say that it reads like Pynchon is showing off his skills and classic writing style, but forgot to have a passion for it.

It is okay, better than most fiction out there still.

Bought my copy last night for 57% off with my B&N membership. (I know weird percentage). Would like to read it this weekend, but I have a lot else to do.

Through Amazon, mine came to around $16 or so.

I had higher hopes for the new map, but I guess it's all you need. I really like how you can easily read w/ the map unfolded for easy reference.

Too bad we'll most likely never see Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin and Beren and Luthien similarly published.
