felt like the writers just took a giant [Mark May] and that's what the script came to be

After thinking about it overnight I think there are 2 ways they could have gone. If they wanted to gloss over the mother getting sick they needed to pull the surprise of having her not die and bring her into the last scene with the kids. Since they filmed that scene back in season 2 and it was locked in that the mother was going to die I would have liked to see more gravity to her death. It needed a scene at her funeral with Robin showing up to console an absolutely destroyed Ted.

IMO the perfect ending after the blue horn would have been to jump 10 more years in the future to Penny's wedding (maybe to Marvin) and have her go through each cast member to explain what they meant to her.

I just don't understand how a show can be so well written for 9 years and then shit the bed in the final episode.

It wasn't really well written in the final season. They had the same problem as The Walking Dead.....they slowed the timing down to a halt. I think the last season spanned like 3 days in real time until the finale. There's only so many noteworthy stories I can actually believe happened in that time span.

I thought for as terrible as that show has gotten, it wasn't that bad of a finale.

Things this show set fire to in the space of one measly hour:

1) Three years of Stinson character development
2) An entire final season building to an event that gets torched in 20 minutes
3) All the goodwill it ever built with those first 4-5-6ish seasons where we actually loved the show.

I thought there was only one good episode this season and it was the next to last one with the wedding. Like many shows, it showed have ended the season prior to the last season. They slowed it way down this season and did little to nothing with showing how they actually met. A lot of this seasons shows were just crap and they could have done a lot more with that development and the mother dying (good suggestion here by Exhawg, BTW who is Penny?). I think the mother dying was just a way in the end to get Robyn and Ted together. And why wasn't Punchy at the wedding?

I don't think anybody at CBS, including the writers, foresaw it becoming so popular. Like most sitcoms, it could've (and should've) ended after 4 or 5 seasons. Instead, it lasted 9 because CBS kept ordering seasons. Bays and Thomas had to stretch the writing accordingly and it showed.

Decent but unspectacular ending to psych. After an epic season with some equally strong cameos it was a bit understated. Perhaps it was more real and personal than the pretend shenanigans that dominated most of Shawn's world.

Penny is Ted's daughter

I missed that and the sons name too.

I felt that way with Seinfeld also. I did think it was apropos that Barney ended up with an unexpected pregnancy and daughter to boot....

I can't get that upset over an ending to a comedy series. I tended to view each episode for its individual value as opposed to something more than that. I agree with much of the complaints though; just don't think it's worth getting worked up over.

Yeah, I think they were trying not to be too showy about it (in spite of playing most of this season marvelously over-the-top), but the final scenes were really nicely done IMO. "Dobson" was just the perfect capper to a series full of outstanding cameos and guest stars. And I liked how Everything changes/Nothing changes for Shawn and Gus, so we know their hijinks will carry on... I'm sure there's already a bunch of cheesy Psych/Monk crossover fanfic hitting the interwebs.

Most of the time I wouldn't get upset, but for me HIMYM hit at a point in my life where I was going through many of the same things that the characters were so I felt more of a connection with the show. As crazy as it sounds I woke up today feeling like I just lost 5 friends. Maybe if there was a happy ending for everyone I would feel a little better. Ted spent 9 years trying to find the one and then he only gets 10 years with her before she bites it.

BTW where was Bob Saget last night?

Agreed. The post crime stuff was vintage psych.

I am not upset about the show, more so, a little disappointed in the last season. I think it was a happy ending for everyone with presumably Ted and Robyn ending up together. I thought it was interesting that the mother lost her original love early and then Ted lost her early.

Bob is doing Greek yogurt commercials with the Full House guys.....
