Unrelated question but why are there so many commercial breaks during sports broadcasts in the US ?

Well of course commercials mean money, but even then the number of commercials is staggering as a non American, I was wondering if there could be another reason, or even reasons for it. Has it always been that way ?
It really picked up in the late 2000s when the TV contracts started picking up.

Now the networks want to recoup as much money as they can (if you ever watch the Super Bowl, it has far more than the usual amount of commercials, although that is slowly changing as well and not for the better), and as a result, you get more commercials.
