"Couldn't care less" translates to "Could care more"...double negative.

The statement is "I could not care less", contracted to "I couldn't care less". Meaning, literally, there is no possible way I could care less what people think.

I think you're confused with what people say incorrectly, often, and that's "I could care less". That means you care. What I said is #2 in the diagram below.
