WC - USA vs Slovenia (Fri 10 ET, ESPN)

doubt that was offsides

the sad thing is that neither bradley or our players know what the call was. if it was offsides, that is a joke because he was ten yards behind the play, and the side judge didn't raise his flag. if it was a foul, then that is anti american bias plain and simple. either way that ass hat needs a vuvuzela horn shoved up his ass!

Yes. We need to win big in the next game to assure a spot, in case there is a tie for second place it comes down to goal differential.

I'm not sure there can be a tie for second place assuming we win our next match. If we win, we are in. (I tried to go through all the scenarios, so I may have missed something but I don't think I did)

Nevermind, I guess an england/slovenia tie would give us all 5 points (assuming england beats algeria today)

The ranking of each team in each group will be determined as follows:
a) greatest number of points obtained in all group matches;
b) goal difference in all group matches;
c) greatest number of goals scored in all group matches.
If two or more teams are equal on the basis of the above three criteria, their rankings will be determined as follows:
d) greatest number of points obtained in the group matches between the teams concerned;
e) goal difference resulting from the group matches between the teams concerned;
f) greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
g) drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee.

Anyone know what the next tiebreaker is after goal differential? What if we beat Algeria by the same 1-0 score that Slovenia does, and they draw 1-1 with England as well?

total number of goals if i remeber correctly. But that would still end in a tie in your scenario. Then I think FIFA decides who advances...by world rankings possibly?

If england wins and then ties slovenia while we win our next game, there would be a 3 way tie for first...

USA sits at 2 points, 2 games played, GD of 0
Slovenia sits at 4 points, 2 games played, GD of 1
England has 1 point, 1 game played, GD of 0
Algeria has 0 points, 1 game played, GD of -1

Assuming England beats Algeria today, England and Slovenia will lead the group with 4 points each. They then play each other.

They are almost in a position where they could play to a draw to ensure they both advance. However, if they play to a draw, and USA wins against Algeria it leaves the door open for England to get knocked out based on goal differential. As such, England will go for the win when they play against Slovenia (which they likely would have anyway).

If England beats Slovenia, then the task is simple for the USA. Beat Algeria, advance. If Slovenia beats England, then again all the USA has to do is win to advance over England. If England and Slovenia draw, then the USA has to win and overcome the goal differential margin in order to advance.

The chances are pretty good, I'd say.

Yeah Slovenia may have been laying dead on the ground to prevent a loss, but the draw really scruffs them anyway. Advantage us unless we pull another Poland 2002 in game 3.

This is why I have no respect for soccer as a sport. On the sport's highest stage, the ref disallows a game-winning goal (in a call that impartial observers on TV call "disgraceful" and "ridiculous" among other things) and yet doesn't even have to say why the goal was disallowed.

Officiating

This is my first post. I was reading this thread as well as the yahoo live chat and espn live chat during the US game. I am a huge soccer fan and have watched almost every World Cup game dating back to 2002. Aside from the Italy vs. US World Cup game in 2006, the officiating in this game was the worst I have ever seen. That disallowed goal was horrendous. I played soccer for 12 years and there is no reason why that goal should have been taken away. If you watch the replay, like someone else already mentioned, Michael Bradley and I believe Clint Dempsey are both getting taken down in the box as Edu scores the goal. Great result for the US, but some truly horrid officiating.

"Overall - I'm glad the game ended in a 2-2 tie. Everything was fair and just and the officiating crew was able to spread the wealth amongst nations large and small"

This was, unfortunately, the worst officiating so far of the 2010 World Cup. A yellow-card for a handball that didn't exist (I hope FIFA is able to take a look at that) and a disallowed goal for offsides (or a foul) or whatever, for something that didn't exist.
