i find rolex watches to be boring. they all look pretty much the same. there are lots of high-caliber watchmakers that produce far more interesting watches. seems like most get rolexes just to say and show that they have a rolex.

which brings me to the second reason i don't like rolexes: too many really good fakes. if i see a rolex out in the wild, my assumption is that it's not real. and that's why whenever someone makes a show of his rolex, i ask if it's a fake and act dismissive when he says it isn't. i won't give that person the ego-stroking he's looking for.

I think Rolex makes an exceptional watch but nothing better than Omega or IWC and not at the level of manufacturers like JLC much less Patek. I think the Daytona is a joke, and if I could walk into the Rolex boutique on Michigan Avenue and walk out with one for the same price as a Speedmaster, I'm still buying the moonwatch.

To me the most distasteful thing about Rolexes though are two-thirds of the people who buy them. They could care less about the watch and are ALL about the status symbol and the fact that everybody from the valet parker to the guy in the next office will know it's a Rolex.

Now all that being said, I am on the waitlist for the one Rolex that I really do like and one of my three iconic watches to own (along with the moonwatch and the JLC Reverso). And it sounds like, despite not being a repeat Rolex customer at the dealer, that I have a fighting chance of getting it by year's end.

That's a solid choice. If I hit the Lotto I'd probably go an Omega Seamaster 300.

Great watch. It won't hold value the way a Submariner will, but it's a technically superior watch. Plus, you can actually walk into a boutique or dealer and buy one. The boutique had the new Seamaster 300 chronographs in with just two sub dials. It was a really elegant looking watch, though if you're going to Omega for a chrono, I think somebody should start with the Moonwatch and go from there.

C'mon! Spelling is important people!

Nope. Mr. Diddly clearly annunciates fifty bucks.

I like watches that glow in the dark. My current watch is a Seiko second generation Monster(200 meter) on a Bond military strap. It's a dive watch and very rugged and simple and glows. The Seiko Monster series are affordable and collectable. Mine has doubled in value since I bought it.

Ahh, OK. Also a great watch. It's easy to get lost wandering the multiple Seamaster lines that Omega puts out. I seriously considered the Aqua Terra GMT as something a little dressier than the PO, but the lugs really made it wear large; whereas the lugs on the PO actually made the larger watch wear smaller on the wrist. Plus, I kind of had my heart set on the 24 hour bezel.

watched this same video a few months ago. it all boils down to this: other than scrutinizing the movement of the second hand, you won't tell a real rolex from a good fake in the wild unless you take the watch off the guy's wrist and pull out a magnifying glass. for that reason, if you're buying a rolex to make a show of it -- as many rolex buyers are inclined to do -- then buy one of the best fakes. i'd much rather spend $1k on a great fake rolex and $9k on a much-less-common iwc (which won't be faked) than $10k on a totally fakeable rolex.

now with all of that being stated, if you're truly rolling in conspicuous income, then a real rolex is just one in a collection of expensive watches. that's why my quoted posted should have instead stated that i'll always assume a rolex in the wild is fake unless the person is of obvious means.
