I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread on Vista, since most are using it now(including me).

My issue right now appears to be some sort of incompatibility between Internet Explorer and Vista. Say, like when I'm going between pages on a BP and IE stops working/hangs up. Then I'm restarting IE.

Disable your add-ons, and if you don't get any problems, that could be the major issue.

I can't get the service pack to install.....for about 6 months now....ugh.

Exactly how is it not installing? Failing upon install or another error?

I've downloaded it - installed it (well almost) and when it gets almost done with the install it automatically rolls it back. I can't even remember what the error was. It takes a long time and I don't sit and stare at the screen for an hour going insane. I do remember it was near the end, can't recall exactly. I've read some things about having to do this or that....I just don't understand why it can't be fixed from their end. why do i have to accomodate it??!?! wtf.

I set up a RAID array and did a clean reinstall. Vista seems reluctant to play nice. I've got it mostly sorted, but for some reason it refuses to shut down cleanly. I end up getting it to the blue shutdown screen and just holding the power button. I fear a driver is hanging, but am hoping someone's had a similar problem, and will save me the trouble of digging through logs to try and sort out which it is... anyone? Bueller?

I figured out that Norton or McAfee were the culprit for my problems. I removed everything, did the install and everything worked. wow.

Completely forgot about this thread... that said, using certified drivers or anything of the such shouldn't cause a conflict.

The fact that your using either of those two AV's errks me, but hey, thats what preference is all about.

Major resource hog, and really just doesnt work for shit in general. I use avast, but there are several free ones out there that put norton and mcafee to shame. Avast has never failed me though.

If you understand how to use the windows scheduler to schedule weekly scans, then Avast is an awesome product, it is far superior to any pay product out there, when our Trend Micro subscription at work expires I am going to purchase it.

AVG Free is nice, but it's way too limited, but great when you just need to get something on a system to clean it up.

Yeah, MacAfee was not compatible with Vista and so I went to Avast as well. I understand MacAfee now has a program that is compatible with Vista, so that could be an option for those who have AOL, as they provide it for free for premium subscribers.

IIRC, Avast was free, but just a couple days ago I got a notice that my subscription was coming to an end and a new program cost $. Anyone know about this?

Can we go back to Windows XP? I wanted to pick up a laptop for my wife to use at home, but everything is Vista. I like XP. Don't want Vista. Invent a new operating system so the software that we own can run on new PCs. I don't have Bill's resources to buy new. What was he thinking?
