If you understand how to use the windows scheduler to schedule weekly scans, then Avast is an awesome product

It has an active scan though that catches the shit before it even gets on your machine. I run a boot scan once every few weeks just for the hell of it, but honestly with vista and avast, I havent gotten a virus yet.

Can we go back to Windows XP? I wanted to pick up a laptop for my wife to use at home, but everything is Vista. I like XP. Don't want Vista. Invent a new operating system so the software that we own can run on new PCs. I don't have Bill's resources to buy new. What was he thinking?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure they phased out the XP and all new operating systems are Vista. I really liked XP as well but was forced to go Vista when I had to get another computer. Unfortunately, I think the idea was to force people to buy a new computer, thus purposefully phasing out the XP program. It's always about the $$$.

Isn't Windows 7 coming out next year?

So long as you don't do anything paticularly dumb, you really don't need too much in the way of active protection. Which is why I usually just tell people to go AVG.

However I've heard solid things about Avast and a few friends use Sophos with little issues.

As for a Firewall - routerWall, hardware level wall (depending on chipset) are typically very sufficient.

IIRC, Avast was free, but just a couple days ago I got a notice that my subscription was coming to an end and a new program cost $. Anyone know about this?

Avast should not be asking you about money. You have to renew your registration each year, but the home edition is free.

Using build 6956 windows 7 right now..No problems encountered yet.
Next Beta is out this Friday..
A) how do I get a Beta version?
B) can I merely launch the install or will it wipe out all existing program files? Pretty key since I may do this will a brand new laptop arriving this week

a) The first 2.5 million can download it from their website tomorrow.
b) you need to have vista & service pack 1 installed, this download is an upgrade from that. However, it doesn't have to wipe out your existing operating system, you can partition your hard drive, or even run it on a virtual drive.

some good info here:
Download a Legal Copy of Windows 7 beta ( 32 bit or 64 bit ) on January 9th - SlickDeals.net Forums

It expires in about 6 months, so make sure you can get back to running through vista afterwards.

I'm excited to try this out, it sounds like a sizeable improvement over Vista.

As Jwins said..Partition it for sure. Anything beta isn't worth investing the bank on,when it comes to important data. You can probably find a beta version for download about anywhere on the net now. The sd link above is dead, but i'm sure it's not hard to find.

Right now i'm using build 7000 with the strider patch.

To anyone who is using windows 7:

Anyone have any idea what it takes to score high on the experience index? What's your specs? My hard drive is killing me...I'm on a q6600,4gigs corsair,9800 gtx geforce, but my lowest subscore is a 5.0 on the hard drive..Just curious to what others might have.
