Vince Young (unemployed)

Interesting talk, you'd think that the team who is the returning champ would be the one jawing. Young had better put up or shut up. Damnit, I'm rooting for Texas but I have read some cocky ass statements coming out of their camp.

Well it makes sense, but I disagree. He was asked if he is ready to guarantee a win and he replied "Yeah, I feel real confident about it."

He was baited for sure, but he did not say "No, I don't want to guarantee...but I am confident in my team."

Big difference in my eyes.

So he is confident that he can guarantee a win? Doesn't sound like he is guaranteeing a victory. for those of you who don't live/visit NY, the post is full of crap day in day out. They mangled up some quotes and some context, etc. It wasn't as good of an answer as Chad Johnson's, but a true guarantee comes out almost by itself without all of the prodding. I'd rather him say what he said then to instill any type of doubt in his team's chances. But that's just me, and I will also try to find a way to defend Vince in just about any situation, color me biased. Oh and I guarantee that he is coming back next year :)

there have been some cocky comments coming out, but that's one of the reasons that this team is different that the one's in the past. Last year our stud RB told the media that he would rather win the Heisman than win the TX-OU game, this year our team predicted that they were going to clean house for the Big XII championship, and did so. At the beginning of the summer, Vince Young wrote on a chalk board that to beat Ohio State, meet him for extra practice. Mack Brown was shockingly happy coming out of the lockeroom against OkState this year, etc.....

If you knew how much our lack of confidence seemed to hurt us in the past, you would take this "cockiness" over the attitude in years past in a heartbeat. Its contagious with our team and fan base this year.

Like I said, I agree he was baited, but I don't see a difference in your statement. If he feels confident in a win, he is guaranteeing the victory as the question was asked.

Notice I did not give an opinion on the matter yet, but anyone who has any familiarity with me knows where I stand. I enjoy guys like Spurrier, Ray Lewis, Chad Johnson, Iverson, etc...I love the swagger.

Except for Namath, who if it had, we wouldn't have to see him grope sideline reporters in a stupor...because no one would care who he was.

which was years ago in a game they were lucky to win. everybody claiming a victory these days usually ends up losing. although i see what people are saying. he isnt clearly saying texas will win by a guarantee i can understand his support to win. but this is typical of the texas team to have some subtle outbursts from listening to the media.

Young was asked if he was ready to step into Namath's shoes and guarantee a win.
"Right now, yeah, I'm very confident about it," he said. "They [the Trojans] come in the game off a high winning streak, and everybody's blowing them up, you know, and they think we're the underdogs and we're not going to come to play. I know that we are. We're going to come to show them the Texas football team."
Nothing wrong with being sure of yourself. Drives me bonkers when players pretend they aren't sure of their team. I can see saying, "Oh, they're a good team, and I expect it will be a fight," if the coach doesn't want bulletin board material out there... but it better be accompanied by a  and a  .

VY did a good job of being frankly confident without going too far. "I'm very confident," is not, "They stand no chance," and saying they will come to play is not the same as saying it's going to be a total massacre.

"Right now I feel I let my guys down, my family down, the whole city of Houston down," said at a news conference at the Hard Rock Cafe.
I wonder if VY is going to put the game on his own back too much? Who knows, but it's what came to mind when I read this.

Anyway... go, Vince, go!

I like swagger too...but I hate arrogance. It's one thing to believe your better (which Vince Young does) and an entirely different thing to give your opponent no respect (Chad Johnson). A true leader inspires confidence among his teammates and demands the other teams respect through action rather than words.

All that guarentees and public gimmicks do, are attract attention to yourself, give the other team fodder and place more pressure on your teammates. I don't really have an issue with the way Vince did this, it's a lot more subtle and it honors the opponent, while placing the praise on his team over himself. The Chad Johnsons of the world focus on individual achievements and one-on-one matchups. I think he's the most talented wide receiver in the NFL not named Randy Moss, but he's a joke of a person and will never be a good leader until he learns to shut his mouth.

I agree with Grad on the subject of swagger...it's necessary to have confidence and to be afraid of no one. A player with confidence can almost beat another before the snap. Remember that there is a fine line between looking like a winner and looking like an over-confident fool.

no wonder we lost those two close games this year :tongue2:

from what texas fans have said over the past year, he's had the weight of texas on his back since HS.

I hope they smoke SC because it only makes our loss to a NC TX all the better...and after we drill ND it sets us up for a big run at next year..oh and is it to early to start selling "Make it 4 of 5 in the fiesta" t-shirts for next year?

I think that people are starting to put words in Young's mouth. He was asked if he wanted to guarantee a win, which is a pretty bold question to ask anyway, and he just said that he was confident in his team and that they were going to come ready to play. To say that "Vince Young Guarentees Win vs. USC" is complete nonsense and untill Young says "I guarentee that we will beat USC" he has not "guarenteed" anything. Theres a difference in being confident in your team and its abilities, and then going out and promising to win.

Pretty tame comment, overall. "Lenn Robbins says Vince guarantees victory." Not really bulletin board material...more likely to hear the trojans say "Who the f@*$ is Lenn Robbins?" than get mad.

Vince could have answered it better...he's usually better just joking around the subject.

Oh, and if you weren't aware, USC is going to win because we "run a high school offense" with "simple route combinations". I swear I've heard that more than I ever heard "at night in the Shoe."
