Vince Young (unemployed)

i think people get too wrapped up in his throwing motion. it isnt pretty, but rivers throws similarly. when you're 6'5''-6'6'' throwing 3/4 isnt going to hurt you that much.

kyle boller has good mechanics and a nice throwing motion, but he is as inaccurate as they come.

I remember watching Kudla wrap his arms around Young and he needed help to get him down. Young had Kudla wrapped around his waste and he was still standing there looking for a receiver. The dude is just plain strong.

Vince Young will be a better NFL QB than Daunte Culpepper. Mark it down.

true but by NFL standards kudla is pretty small compared to the NFL standard even with his strength.

I think VY will be an effective NFL quarterback. I think his accuracy has improved, although the aTm game didn't indicate that.

He became more successful when his coaches allowed him more freedom. It was his leadership in several tight games in 2004 that got things rolling for his team. His efforts against Kansas on 4th and very long, and in the Oklahoma St. comeback were very impressive, and got the team and the coaching staff believing in him.

But that doesn't translate into the ability to instantly be an effective leader of an NFL team. I think his physical strength, which makes him difficult to sack, will get him into some trouble against NFL defenses. The second hit will come faster and stronger, creating turnovers. I would instruct him to use his feet to buy time, trust his instincts on when to run, but to protect the ball and go down once somebody gets 2 hands on him.

I'll toss out Steve Young as a comparison. Great athletic ability, but it took him some time to be a star in the NFL. His first four years in the league, his accuracy was questioned (the first 2 years Tampa was just bad), as he was a 53.x% passer for those years. After sitting behind Montana for a few years, and being in a great system for QB's, he had a Hall-of-Fame career.

I'm not saying that VY will go to the HOF as a QB. I'm saying that he'll get a shot as a QB in the NFL, and his running ability will give defensive coordinators nightmares. If gets into a system that allows him to run when he needs to, and can complete close to 60% of his passes, he'll win a lot of games.

And for those quoting QB stats, UCLA's QB spells his name Drew Olson.

No doubt he's good, but people will be able to tackle him regularly in the NFL, so he has to improve his consistency passing to do well there. I think he can succeed along the lines of a Byron Leftwich...he's more mobile than that, obviously, but he's the one that comes to mind, for some reason. It may take him some time, but he'll get there eventually. I don't know that he'll be a great QB, but he'll be good.

Kudla wrapped around him and Carpenter bearing in. He was under duress when Hawk picked him off, yes.

Still. Anyone who can keep standing while Kudla has you wrapped up is one strong sumbitch.
And watching Hawk bring down Young singlehandedly in the open field in the 4th quarter is a testament to what a force A.J. is. As the old saying goes, "Guns dont' kill people, A.J. Hawk kills people." That tackle had "Butkus" all over it.
