Verizon & Android news

Motorola Droid 2 $99.99 at TigerDirect.com with new account or renewal - SlickDeals.net Forums

Tried the droid 2 after lunch today. A little sleeker, the buttons are raised and defined, but they are still a bit stiff and cramped. I still do not like typing on the top row at all, and the overall keyboard is still very mediocre.

I do not understand why htc does not make an android version of the touch pro 2. It would smoke every phone out there. Instead motorola gets to keep underwhelming us with their hardware.

Listened to Wall Street Journal podcast this morning. They said iPhone users get laid like 3 times as often as Droid users. BlackBerry somewhere in between.

Data without comment.
Well they have to get it somewhere, what with the porn-free experience Jobs has created.

Finally, the Incredible OTA is here! And like all Android phones, now that we know the location for the Incredible Froyo OTA, there is an option to go get it versus waiting for it to be pushed to you. This is the same file as you would get if you just waited, and you'll have the exact same Froyo as everyone else, so there's no need to worry. Here's how it's done:

  1. Grab the OTA file here from the Android Central Forums.
  2. Make sure it's named update.zip
  3. Copy it to the root (base directory) of your SD card. Don't put it in any folders, and don't put it on the internal memory.
  4. Shut your phone off
  5. While holding the volume down button, turn the phone back on.
  6. In the white Bootloader screen, select recovery from the list.
  7. In the recovery screen (the triangle with exclamation mark), press volume up and power. You'll go to the recovery menu.
  8. In the recovery menu, select "apply sdcard:update.zip"
  9. The phone will find the file, and when finished prompt you to reboot. Reboot via the menu, then patiently wait for the phone to reboot, and enjoy your Froyo when it's done.

That's because IPhone users have a lot of free time on their hands what with their barista jobs usually being part time.

I think I just came a little... DivX certified? Awesomesauce.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab Runs Froyo, Has Flash and Measures 7 Inches

It's one of those moments where the final product actually exceeds expectations based on previous leaks. Sure, a lot of the specs we had heard before, but did you know the Galaxy Tab was going to be the first-ever DivX certified tablet?

We're pretty sure there'll be other tablet sizes coming at a later date from Samsung, but this particular GT-P1000 model has a 7-inch TFT-LCD WSVGA screen (with 1024 x 600 pixels), and is powered by a Cortex A8 1.0GHz processor and a PowerVR SGX540 GPU?the same one used in their Galaxy S phone-and runs with 512MB of RAM.

As expected, the back-facing camera is a 3MP affair with auto-focus and an LED flash, and the forward-facing one (for video conferencing) has a 1.3MP sensor. In some of Samsung's comedy lifestyle photos below, you'll see that back-facing camera being used for the Layar app. I'm not sure it's going to be any more convenient than using your phone, but it's most certainly a welcome addition.

Two storage capacities are on offer, either 16GB or 32GB, with both models allowing for a further 32GB memory expansion via the card slot.

Several connectivity options have been included, such as Wi-Fi 802.11n and Bluetooth 3.0, and 3G support should a user want to use data with one of the supporting carriers (Vodafone has been signed up from the get-go.)

This is the phone I've been waiting for them to make... a touchpro 2 with Android (no idea why it has taken this long given the absurd production rate of these phones):

there is a rumor it may be coming to verizon:

logitechs-harmony-remote-app-hits-android-market-for-registered-testers/
Logitech’s just slyly dropped a beta version of their remote application in the Android market today that we all suspect is the companion application for those scooping up the Logitech Revue (rumored to come September 29th). The app is simply listed as “Remote” in the Android market by DHG and the description reads “By invitation only. App will not work unless you are an authorized tester.” Of course, thousands of Android users didn’t heed this warning before downloading (resulting in the app getting two and a half stars from 14 raters, though I’m sure Logitech couldn’t care less.)

Could this be for those 600-odd attendees at Google’s Zeitgeist event last week who received “Google TV units”? Late September still sounds good from where we’re standing and this app coming out 10 days before the rumored hard date might mean there’s truth to a Revue launch before October rolls in.

and now for some HD videos of the new HTC phones:

Verizon said we’d be seeing the phase out of AMOLED displays on the HTC Droid Incredible by the end of September, and sure enough Best Buy is already stocking the newly-screened handset. The change should help to alleviate any remaining supply and demand issues keeping the DI on Verizon’s shelves and off of backorder. Incredibles with the new screen carry SKU number ADR6300VW3.
As an added bonus it also looks like this version of the Droid Incredible is shipping with Froyo installed out of the box, or at least the software version on the box would suggest such. A listing of version 2.15.00.07.28 matches up with the Android 2.2 OTA update Incredible owners received.
