Direct competition on an equal network would only enhance the arms race for better phones between Cupertino & Mountain View.
It's beyond that, it would force cell phone companies like Verizon and ATT to actually focus on the costumer instead of hoping for the next big thing.
The fact that ATT is basically neglecting thier customer base because, well, where else are you going to go? You've got all your music in itunes, you've bought all those nifty apps, you've grown to love your device, yet instead of actually focusing on expanding their network, they are going to take the current network, make it faster, and still screw people in smaller areas.
Verizon is going another route, they are starting to really jack people financially because they have the coverage, 20 bucks for unilimited text, 40 bucks for "unlimited" data, and now they are enforcing data plans for phones that really aren't "smart" phones.
Sprint has a great network, well at least here, but most of their phones suck, here they have full 4g running, so you can get a usb 7 megabit device you can use anywhere in the city, companies like Clear and Comcast are actually leasing that network and offering internet services, Comcast offering "comcast mobile" and Clear just offering it as a replacement for Qwest or Comcast as internet providers.
Then you have the little companies, like Cricket, T-Mobile, Etc... who offer spectacular deals but their actual coverage is light, thus you find yourself needing to use another providers network which costs you out the ass.
Open the phones, you buy the device and you choose which network you want, this only helps the consumer. Force these companies to stop sitting in business meetings and going "If we get a cool fucking toy, we don't have to worry about customer service or our coverage, people will just be like "whoa, what a cool fucking toy"
/Rant mode off.
