Verizon & Android news

Still extremely overpriced, and now they're forcing a new charge for a bogus data plan on phones that don't even need it. If they're going to force these data plans on everyone then get rid of the $20 unlimited texting ass-raping charge. I have this stupid nickel and dime bullshit that VZW and ATT force upon everyone.

Verizon is going another route, they are starting to really jack people financially because they have the coverage, 20 bucks for unilimited text, 40 bucks for "unlimited" data, and now they are enforcing data plans for phones that really aren't "smart" phones.

Verizon is dead to me after this latest price hike. Contract is up one week from today :groove:

I'm late to the party here but...

So. Damn. Annoying. My 2-year is up so I went to the verizon store to get a new phone. All new phones require that data package, which is at least $10 per month. They had 4 old phones that didn't require it but my current phone is better than all of them. I guess maybe I've been spoiled in that I think it is my right to get a new phone every 2 years ha...

I got a new phone thinking I'd try the data thing for the 30 day trial. It's pretty much useless unless you buy a few apps to go along with it and each app is like $3-$8 per month or something. So once you get a few you might as well just get the crackberry instead for roughly the same cost.

edit: Also, just an fyi, if you do the 30 day trial be aware there's also a hidden 3 day trial inside of it. There's a $35 "activation fee" or something, and if you don't return it in 3 days then that $35 is not refundable.

Help..
Sometimes my Droid just does stuff... like makes calls... embarrassing... a couple times it launched an app... by itself.. clues?

Your R2 unit probably has a bad motivator. You may need to go to Toshi Station and pick up some power converters.

Did Google Just Multi-Punch Apple In The Face?

Apparently, google decided not to put multi touch into thier OS at Apples request, at this time, there was a good relationship between the two, apparently the last update of the NexusOne has Multitouch, as does the Milestone (The European version of the droid) so it's obviously been hacked over here, I have it on my rooted droid.

So, the Apple/Google war gets more and more interesting.

Has anybody using the droid tried using Google Voice to replace a texting plan? I'm thinking about getting one (hopefully when the N1 comes to Verizon), but would like to not have to pay for the texting plan if I already have to pay for data. The app comes built in and Google advertises for this functionality, but I wanted to know if anyone had hands on experience with this.

Well, Google Voice will SMS, but the problem is that it doesn't push to it, it autorefreshes like every 5 minutes, pretty dumb.

Wife and I both use Palringo on our iPhones. It is free and supports push notifications through all major IM services. However, the free edition will auto-logout after two hours. The Premium version supports 24 hour connections. It works great as a substitute for SMS texting.

Don't know if the Android version supports push, but it's worth a look.

USB hack connects Droid to printers, video cams, and more • The Register

A reverse engineering expert has disclosed a way to make his Motorola Droid host USB-enabled devices, a hack that allows the smartphone for the first time to directly connect to printers, video cameras, TV tuners, and a wide variety of other peripherals.

The modification was devised by Mike Kershaw from Kismet and Mike Baker of OpenWRT and shared with the world by Chris Paget, a new Droid owner and chief hacker for reverse engineering firm H4RDW4RE.

Using a charging cable that plugs into a car's cigarette lighter, a micro-USB cable, and a USB extender cable, he devised an improvised micro-dongle and connector cable. Getting the Droid to work with a Linux-enabled USB device is as simple as turning the smartphone off, connecting the cable to the host and peripheral and turning the Droid on. As soon as the Motorola logo disappears, you'll need to unplug the micro-dongle.

Once your Droid is booted - voila -it should now work with the device. You can even pull up a terminal and look at dmesg to see the usual kernel notifications that appear when new USB devices are connected.

Hardware hackers are amazing.
