Value City Arena (official thread)

The Schott is where Ohio State plays its home basketball games and for the second time this season the game clock and shot clock above the basket has gone out when they had been ready to start the second half. For all the money they have put into that place would someone please call an electrician to evaluate the situation or have a couple of shot clocks readily available in case something does happen.

I mean for that to happen twice in one season is an embarrassment:blush:. It never happened at St. John that I can recall.
a guy sitting by me said that someone was playing with the camera mounted on the basket at halftime. i wonder if it was related? i didnt see it or pay attention to that, i was to busy sleeping through the drum majors in training and the third one making the court look like a golf ball as he dropped his baton all afternoon...

I had no clue that the nationwide arena was the Schott... lol

Ok well I liked the feel of St. Johns Arena its a bit small and cramped but I think it'd be a much more of a home court advantage than the Schott. For sure the schott is a really good recruiting tool IMO.

lol, I was never asking about playing games in the shoe' but I was referencing that for the games I attended (Cincy 04, Texas 05') I was equally impressed with the noise level at St. Johns as I was with the shoe'.

I think admissions felt sorry for me or something.. haha I just wrote them to get me the hell out of Gopher territory and damn I'm attending OSU' next fall.
Nice job getting out of Minnesota. When you come to Ohio State, the arena where the skull session is held is St. John Arena and not St. Johns. If you want to know ticket prices call 1-800-gobucks.

well hot damn we got our own hotline.... that is neat.

Yeah I made the place sound like a catholic hospital by saying St. John's eh?

I'm visiting OSU for the spring game so I'll get to know the names of almost everything then! You can kinda tell I've only been truely exposed to the football program. This is why I wish our fans would get out to the basketball games as well.. I mean shit I didn't even know what our arena's are called thats unexceptable I'll go publically flog myself now!

.... well after it stops snowing.

Well there's no such thing as Kroger's, Meijer's and a number of others either... but that rarely stops people :smash: :p

At the risk of being "that guy" who misses the joke, the Schott and Nationwide are completely different arenas. :)

the place also boosts not one obstructed seat

I guess it depends on your definition of "obstructed."

I had season tickets in 88-89 and 89-90.

I'd go so far as to say that my seats during the 89-90 season were dangerously close to my definition of "obstructed."

skull session is at st johns, that used to be the basketball arena.
i dont think playing games in the shoe is likely to happen.

have a great day, and you got into theosu? what happened to the "new admissions standards"

Never heard of St. Johns...:tongue2:

As for the add on...That is such a great idea and will make the schott that much better for both the mens and womens team...

Also while we are talking about the Schott, I truly believe that if we can continue to put a very good team on the court, especially one that can stay in the top 25 consistantly that the crowds will only continue to improve, as I think they took a step back from last year, but last years team played a little better...

The thing I would like to see improve is the crowds for the womens games...Very dissapointing that the team that wins the big ten was only getting about 3000 for their games...Got about 6000 for their last game...

Hope we get a full house on Sunday for the MSU game...

Nationwide Arena is the Blue Jackets' arena. OSU played YSU there last season, but that was an anomaly.
Actually, it is not an anomaly... someone can correct me if I am wrong but I believe if a site wants to host any NCAA tournament games they must have at least one D-I college game scheduled in that season. Nationwide hosted the first two rounds last year and has aspirations to do so again... in order to fulfill that requirement I believe OSU has agreed to play 1 game a year there... I'll look for supporting documentation.

Damn. I'm sure you are right. I remember reading that at some point.

I'll stand by my statement that it was anomalous in that it was out of the ordinary. :p

anomalous
Main Entry:anom?a?lous
Pronunciation: ə-ˈn?-mə-ləs
Function:adjective
Etymology:Late Latin anomalus, from Greek anōmalos, literally, uneven, from a- + homalos even, from homos same ? more at same
Date:1655

1: inconsistent with or deviating from what is usual, normal, or expected

When I used to work for Sodexho-Marriot (the people who feed the schott)
I sometimes would think that the icecapade's shows for children got louder than certain games at the start of the season...

It seems like at least in my memory, that St. John arena, was more intimidating because of the way the people were stacked and crammed in.
It had that feeling like you were going to fall forward and wouldn't stop till you found the bottom.
I don' think that people's memory is served by the noise, but the appearance.
I saw a Celtics game there once......that was the quietest I'd ever seen St. John Arena, and Bird and Parish was there.

anyhow, I like both arenas equally...

I think the schott just lacks the appearance of being louder as it has more space, but is most probably, just as loud.

Supporting documentation from the NCAA Bylaws:

31.1.3.2 Site Selection. The governing sports committees shall evaluate prospective sites for NCAA championships in terms of the specific criteria approved by the Championships/Competition Cabinet. The division championships committees may assign specific priorities to these criteria for their respective championships. These shall be specified in the appropriate championships handbooks. A governing sports committee that desires to use additional criteria shall obtain Championships/Competition Cabinet approval before doing so.

31.1.3.2.1 Criteria for Site Determination. The following criteria are to be used in the evaluation of sites for all competition in NCAA championships:
(a) Quality and availability of the facility and other necessary accommodations;
(b) Revenue potential (e.g., a financial guarantee or guideline that ensures fiscal responsibility and is appropriate for the particular event, as recommended by the governing sports committee and approved by the Championships/Competition Cabinet);
(c) Attendance history and potential;
(d) Geographical location; and
(e) Championships operating costs. (Revised: 11/1/01)

31.1.3.2.1.1 Site Bid Information. Sports committees shall submit information related to championships site bids in a format approved by the Championships/Competition Cabinet. (Adopted: 11/1/01)

31.1.3.2.3 On-Campus vs Off-Campus Sites. Preference shall be given to conducting competition on the grounds or in the buildings of educational institutions unless there are compelling reasons, based on evaluation of the criteria in Bylaw 31.1.3.2.1 (which shall be applied to both on-campus and off-campus sites), to conduct the competition in an off-campus facility. In those instances in which it is advisable to conduct the competition at off-campus sites, the host institution(s) shall have complete control, supervision and management of the facility being used. (Revised: 12/3/90)
So it appears that it is NOT a requirement to host a collegiate competition but are done for evaluation reasons (revenue, cost, attendance, etc.). Playing a game at Nationwide allows the NCAA to do that evaluation.

I just wonder how much of an effect the building of the Schott has had in our ability to recruit the big-time players that we have recruited in the past few years. I wonder if they would have been willing to play for Ohio State if we were still playing in St. John.

New practice facility ready in two years

I went to Value City Arena this afternoon to see the unveiling of its new, state-of-the-art scoreboard and a 970-foot LED board that encircles the arena on the suite level.
The arena folks handed out an informational sheet with all the technical details: ?High resolution video delivered through 341 trillion colors featured on four 16-by-9-foot 6mm screens, eight 6-by-10-foot 10mm matrix displays and two 16.5 mm ?rings? encircling the middle and bottom. All of the boards can be timed to display content simultaneously or programmed independently.?
Cool. But one sentence at the end of the news release caught my eye: ?This season will also feature the addition of transparent shot clocks (so those sitting in the end zone aren?t ?posted? by the old black ones on top of the backboards), and the Department of Athletics will move ahead with plans for a new basketball complex to be built onto the west side of the Schottenstein Center.?
The addition will extend west but also stretch north of the current practice gym and cover the loading-dock area. Being designed by the local architectural firm Moody/Nolan (former OSU basketball player Curtis Moody is president), which designed the Schottenstein Center, it will include new practice courts for the men?s team, new offices for the men?s and women?s staffs and a ?hall of fame? area for displaying the programs? trophies, awards and other memorabilia. The current practice gym will become exclusively the women?s.
