VA OL Zach Rice (North Carolina Verbal)

-Rice says the branding opportunities at Ohio State really stand out to him.

An interest in the opportunity to benefit financially doesn’t seem like a net positive for Ohio State.

Humans are bad at deferring short term gain (ie McDonalds bags) for the possibility of even greater (but uncertain) gains in the future (ie maybe making a lot of money off your jersey sales at Ohio State).

Maybe Rice really does like the humble grind of being on the line at Ohio State and is sold by the branding opportunities.

It seems equally likely he likes having his ego stroked and is interested in instant returns.

I don’t know him, obviously, but his social media presence seems to point to the latter being the stronger presence here.

I will be happily surprised if it’s the former, I guess we’ll see.

We have no context around what size hammer they are swinging wit the NIL money. I'm very interested to see it.

Using the estimate we saw last year, that Fields could have made ~$400K, you could see the possibility to overpower the McDonalds bag approach almost overnight.

Say a top shelf OT can make ~$100K and you show that the better you play, the more that goes up type of carrot well, it gets awfully difficult to match that kind of money in cash, under the table for all kinds of reasons.

This should probably get moved to the NIL thread but it'd exciting to see how it will unfold.

To be clear, I wasn't saying the kid is taking money, just commenting on the theoretical impact NIL could have on the world of McDonalds bag recruiting which, we do know exists.

Oh no, I didn’t even see your post when I made my post. I do agree with you, though.

I just meant the judgement about him possibly being personality fit. That’s something none of us really know and there’s no reason to paint this kid, or any of them, with that brush. Especially when it just appears that he enjoys this once in a lifetime opportunity and not harming anyone.

I’d like to think I’m providing commentary on the situation as I see it with as little judgement as possible.

Zach Rice and almost every other player of his caliber are going to be offered McDonalds bags. It is usually pretty apparent when that is going to be a bigger factor in the recruitment or not.

And as I’ve said in a previous thread, I think Ohio State is a small time player in the McDonalds bag department comparatively speaking, although I do not rule it out entirely.

As Jax said, it will be interesting to see how much, if at all, the movement on the NIL money rebalances that equation.

Let's be honest OSU is probably in the money game too. But I think most top recruits see more than just a MCDonalds bag to go to a school. Because in the short term its nice, but these kids in the end want to set their parents/families up for the future, and a bag of cash only goes so far. For many of us with kids and a spouse, it'd be nice to get a bag of money, but honestly a few grand won't really make too much of dent on my adult expenses(student loans, mortgage, bills, car note, kids tuition, food, etc). I think NIL will be big, but I doubt its going to make any more competitive balance in CFB. The same schools in the CFP will continue to be the same ones. Tbh, OSU, Clemson and Bama could stop recruiting for 2-3yrs and still win their conferences. And I'm not speaking in hyperbole, our 3rd string could win the B1G, it'd be close against the disciplined teams, but we still have more talent, same goes for the other 2 teams. All 3 teams lose transfers that go and start for other teams.
And this all has to do with Rice, because I think he's smart enough to know that the school he ends up with, will help build his personal brand for college capital and also have security in case he doesn't make it to the NFL. I think that's the crux of NIL, to set them up for life financially and not just place the focus solely on football.
