USFL / XFL (merged official thread)

I remember watching Jim Kelly vs Steve Young have a shootout in the USFL. Bobby Hebert, Brian Sipe, and Doug Flutie played in that league too.

Since then Spring leagues have had scrub QBs who couldn't play in the NFL. It makes for boring football.

XFL stadium employee tests positive for coronavirus

A CenturyLink Field concessions employee who worked during the XFL's Seattle Dragons home game on Feb. 22 tested positive for the coronavirus, according to King County health officials, ESPN reports.

The NFL's Seattle Seahawks and MLS's Seattle Sounders also use the CenturyLink Field for home games, though only the Sounders are in season at the moment.

King County officials said in a statement that the 22,060 people who were at the Feb. 22 game against the Dallas Renegades were at low risk of also testing positive for the virus that has infected more than 100,000 people worldwide.

Dozens of bidders in 'active discussions' to buy XFL, restart league for 2021 tournament, per report

Shuttered amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the XFL may not be dead just yet

Two months after the revived XFL abruptly suspended and then cancelled its inaugural season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the now-bankrupt spring football league may have found new life. According to The Athletic's Daniel Kaplan, the XFL's investment bank is currently in "active discussions" with dozens of potential purchasers who want to fund and restart the league for a 2021 season.

In mid-April, days after laying off nearly its entire staff, the XFL filed for bankruptcy. Owner/founder Vince McMahon said then that he would not try to buy back the league, and he's reiterated that stance in an attempt to refute accusations he used bankruptcy as a tool to purchase the XFL for "pennies on the dollar." With McMahon out of the picture, however, "there is a robust market" for the league, Kaplan reported, not only to fill a spring 2021 schedule but prevent any competitors from seizing on an opportunity to supplement the NFL with additional professional football.

Twenty different bidders, to be exact, have executed non-disclosure agreements to negotiate with Houlihan Lokey, the XFL's global investment bank, according to Kaplan. Six more are in the process of doing so. And all indications are that all potential purchasers intend to try to bring the XFL back onto the turf -- and TV -- by the spring.

"In fact, I understand the Debtor has modeled for 2021 a made-for-TV, 12-week tournament-style approach to its business," Houlihan managing partner William Hardie told Kaplan, "since the XFL is particularly well suited for a crowd-free experience that could thrive in the current environment, given its existing innovations such as in-game audio from players and coaches and live on-screen sports wagering information."

The XFL may be on life support; but it is not quite dead yet after all.

DWAYNE "THE ROCK" JOHNSON BUYS XFL IN $15 MIL DEAL... That's What I'm Cooking!!

FINALLY, THE ROCK HAS COME BACK TO ... PRO FOOTBALL!?

The WWE legend just teamed up with an investment group to snatch up Vince McMahon's XFL league for $15 million, the league confirms in a statement.

The league had filed for bankruptcy after being resurrected for the 2020 season -- and was supposed to be auctioned off to highest bidder on Monday.

But, Dwayne Johnson and his partners -- Dany Garcia (Rock's business partner and ex-wife) and partners at RedBird Capital (led by Gerry Cardinale) -- swooped in and bought it up this weekend before it hit the auction block.

The deal must now be approved in bankruptcy court on Friday -- and if everything goes smoothly, it could close by August 21.

The Rock (along with Dany) and RedBird are reportedly 50/50 partners in the deal.

Remember, the XFL got off to a pretty decent start in 2020 -- but COVID essentially served as a death sentence to the league, forcing it to shut down in March.

The league filed for chapter 11 in April -- listing $10 to $50 million in debts.

The Rock issued a statement saying, "The acquisition of the XFL with my talented partners, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale, is an investment for me that’s rooted deeply in two things - my passion for the game and my desire to always take care of the fans."

"With pride and gratitude for all that I’ve built with my own two hands, I plan to apply these callouses to the XFL, and look forward to creating something special for the players, fans, and everyone involved for the love of football."

The plan is to relaunch the league -- but so far, no timetable has been set.
