USFL / XFL (merged official thread)

After former Ohio State stars Johnnie Dixon and Mike Weber were taken in the initial draft, two more former Buckeye players were selected in the supplemental draft. Tight end Marcus Baugh was taken with the fourth pick of the third round by the Michigan Panthers. Offensive lineman Matthew Burrell, who transferred to Sam Houston State in 2018, was taken three picks before Baugh by the Tampa Bay Bandits.

What to know for the USFL: Rules, coaches, team quarterbacks, schedule, rosters, salaries and more for the inaugural 2022 season

What will the games look like?

The USFL moved in the direction of other recent spring leagues, most notably the XFL in 2020, in hopes of speeding up the game and using rule innovation to maximize viewer attention. Some USFL rules that will be different from the traditional NFL game include:
  • A 35-second play clock

  • Three options after a touchdown: a one-point kick from the 15-yard line, a 2-point try from scrimmage at the 2-yard line and a 3-point try from scrimmage at the 10-yard line

  • The option to kick off or have an untimed down from their own 33-yard line in which the team retains possession if it gains 12 or more yards

  • Kickoffs from the 25-yard line, which Fisher predicted will nearly eliminate touchbacks

  • Best-of-three shootout format in overtime, where each team gets three plays from the 2-yard line, and the one with the most points after each team has three plays is the winner (after that, overtime extends to sudden death, and the first score wins)

  • On punts, gunners can't line up outside the numbers and can't be double-teamed until after the ball is kicked

  • A 15-yard walk-off for defensive pass interference

  • Multiple forward passes are allowed, as long as they are all attempted behind the line of scrimmage
NFL competition committee chairman Rich McKay said recently that the league will watch the results of the USFL's punt scheme as it contemplates its own changes to the play.

USFL referees are supervised by former NFL officiating chief and current Fox Sports analyst Mike Pereira, and the league is using officials who are part of the NFL's officiating development program.

I didn't know if this went into this thread, or the *ichigan thread in college football, or if he had his own thread, already. The rumor is the De'Veon Smith may have been cut because he wasn't allowed to have any pizza and he was grumpy about that.

It makes the USFL look like a bunch of chumps, in my opinion. But I won't let that stop me from laughing at a *ichigan *an.

XFL pitches league to agents in attempt to counteract USFL, source says

The XFL continued its efforts to counterprogram the USFL's return to the field by convening a virtual meeting of agents Monday night to pitch them on the league's plans for 2023 and beyond, a source told ESPN.

The XFL's top football executives -- Marc Ross, Doug Whaley and Russ Giglio -- told agents that the XFL would offer higher salaries and better benefits than the USFL.

Ross, Whaley and Giglio also suggested that the XFL's season schedule, which will begin in February and end in May, would be more "advantageous" for players who want to get subsequent consideration from NFL teams, according to an internal outline of the meeting obtained by ESPN.

USFL players are receiving $4,500 per week in addition to bonuses if their team wins. They also receive subsidized housing during the regular season; The USFL pays $75 toward a daily $150 hotel room rate at the league's one-site location in Birmingham, Alabama. Ross and Whaley told agents that XFL salaries will be higher and will include full housing and meal costs during the season.

Each of the XFL's eight teams is expected to have 70-man rosters, with 45 active for games, translating to 560 jobs for players -- about 200 more than the current roster limits of the USFL. USFL players signed two-year contracts, complicating any effort to switch leagues in 2023.
