USC Transfers (Merged)

From what I understand, Fred was interested in transferring back, therefore it wasn't OSU initiating it. Is there anyway for Fred to get any feedback from OSU before deciding to terminate his schollie at USC? It seemed like Nevada was implying that JT wouldn't talk to Freddie until he got his release... it's hard to know what he meant since his comments were reserved, but his attitude towards Pete was quite clear. Can a school let a play know they are also interested, and then have him get his release?

Correct. JT would need written permission from USC's AD before he could speak to Fred.

Here is a breakdown of the rules...

Thanks grad. From what I'm reading, freddie needed to get a "permission to contact letter" from your current AD. This does not sound like the same thing as getting a release to no longer be on scholarship.

I realize JT can't talk until the steps have been taken... what I'm wondering is can Fred get one of these permission to contact letters, talk to OSU, and then change his mind and stay on scholarship at USC?

Do you have to burn your bridges for good before exploring? It seems like there is an interim period, and this is what I'm curious about... and where I could see the coach changing things.

Please school me further in the ways of NCAA jargon :)

Certainly...but I don't know how smart that would be.

Obviously not very smart, especially if he already was not on the best terms with petey. I guess its better to strand a few recruits than to leave enough freedom for programs to have all kinds of turnover due to transfers.

It would seem to me, a large percentage of the time the AD would grant the student the OK to initiate contact about transferring. If a kid feels like he made a mistake - for playing time or for distance to school or whatever - I think it's in the schools best interest to let the kid go. I would think a guy like... say Matt Lienart, isn't going anywhere. But if Booty wanted to, seeing as how he's burning up his time on the bench, I think he should be released (if that's what he wanted) so that he can show his skills elsewhere.

Has Tressel ever blocked a transfer - or a kid wanting to explore that option?

I think there is a difference between allowing a kid to transfer and allowing some rival coach to have the chance to coax your player into wanting to leave. If FD wants to leave, he should take the necessary steps on his own and not at JT's urging.

FD was the one who initiated the possibility. With how UNLV was blockaded (which is a complex topic apparently), I wonder if Davis was similarly not granted permission.

If a player is unhappy enough to want to transfer, why exactly wouldn't you let him explore that possibility? What value is he to your team if he's unhappy? Wouldn't that scholarship be better spent on a senior walk-on who has been a great contributor?

Gotta side with Pete

As much as I'd like the chance to bang on Pete, I totally agree with his statement...if a player was in contact with another school before he quit, he should not get his release.

Poach an egg instead.

Again, we are all discussing this under facts alleged from a tOSU source. I mean no disrespect to you or Nevada, but we have to keep light of the fact that we don't really know how FD feels right now.

If Fred is unhappy enough to want to transfer, he will. He'll start by asking for his release. Once that happens, he and JT can discuss whatever they want.

As it stands, FD isn't so unhappy that he has asked for a release. What sense would it make for USC to allow a rival coach to try to push him to that point?

Speaking of Fred Davis, here he is at today's practice (in the white shirt):

He looks very neutral. Thanks for the good discussion everyone, and I'm sure all the facts will never be released unless Fred asks for his release. I'm jealous, wish we could watch our practices (tho I enjoy them hiding what's coming this year).

No matter if Fred Davis, or Rocky Hinds, or Chauncey Washington, or anyone for that matter wants to transfer, I do think it is shit that USC can tell them to not stay in conference or else go to UNLV. If Petey wants to join NFL pastures for millions, no one can stop him. He can lie to these kids to get them there and then do what he pleases afterwards. Sure, Southern Cal is a great draw, the damn place nearly sells itself. I've never been there, but trust me, it's on my list to visit. If I was a stud recruit, I'd take a free vacation there too.

The best part about this whole situation is what it is going to do to USC's future recruiting. You can only get the best player at every position every year for so long until you start getting feedback from guys that have done it before. Now, we are right in the middle of their dynasty, and so far everything has been rosy. Right around the time that they lose a game or two, and don't look so invincible, these OH and NJ and FL kids aren't going to just jump at the chance to play there. Honestly, I don't think PC will be there much longer. He already lost Chow and Orgeron, and hasn't quite yet lost Leinart or Bush. But the time will come. These '06 and '07 studs might just yet see a reason to avoid USC, and it's eventually going to catch up with them. Just like it does at every other big-time program. OSU fell off the map for a couple years, scUM lost 4 games a few years in a row, NEB is almost terrible these days, and Oklahoma wasn't that good not too long ago.

Slap the thigh and ride the wave, fellas. The USC dynasty will not go on forever, and don't forget, a new season starts less than a month from now. It's anyone's Rose Bowl.
