USC is the NCAA darling?

ysubuck placed this LA-Times article in the police blotter thread earlier today, but since it has more info on the Maualaga incident, I'm tossing it in here also.

USC Linebacker Booked on Suspicion of Battery

By Gary Klein, Times Staff Writer

USC linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested early Tuesday morning and booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery after allegedly punching a man during a party near campus, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

Maualuga, a freshman who is regarded as a future star, was booked at the LAPD's Southwest Division station. He was released on $20,000 bail, said Kevin Maiberger, a public information officer for the LAPD. Maualuga is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 22.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>Maualuga, 18, was demoted to the service team Tuesday, and Coach Pete Carroll said he would wait until he had all the facts before deciding what further action, if any, he would take.

"We're aware of it, and when we get more information we'll head forward with what we get," Carroll said. "As always, we're going to do our stuff in-house as we have in the past."

Maualuga declined to comment.

The incident involving Maualuga allegedly occurred about 1:10 a.m. outside a house in the 1100 block of West 29th Street, according to police.

A witness, who did not speak to police, said Maualuga appeared intoxicated and was one of several Trojan players in attendance.

The witness said that the 6-foot-2, 245-pound Maualuga was among a group of about five people standing outside the house when Maualuga noticed a man standing with two women about 10 feet away.

After Maualuga and the man exchanged words, Maualuga walked toward the man and women and, unprovoked, punched the man in the face, the witness said. The man's head hit the side of the house, and Maualuga punched the man in the face again as he slumped, bloodied, to the ground.

When a woman said she was going to call the police, the witness said Maualuga responded: "I own the police," before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police arrived about 10 minutes later.

The alleged victim refused an ambulance but filed a citizen's arrest report, Maiberger said.

Maualuga turned himself in at the Southwest Division and was booked at 4 a.m., LAPD spokesman Jason Lee said. He was released after posting bond.

The alleged incident involving Maualuga is the second in eight months involving a freshman linebacker at USC.

In March, Brian Cushing allegedly punched a man at a party he attended with quarterback Mark Sanchez in Orange County. Sgt. Mike Gavin of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday that no arrests were made in what would have been a misdemeanor case because the alleged victim refused to file charges.

Maualuga, from Eureka, Calif., has made 13 tackles in seven games while playing on special teams and as a backup to starter Oscar Lua.

Last week, Carroll said Maualuga did not attend a practice because he was visiting his ill father. On Saturday against Washington State, Maualuga delivered a big hit on a kick return.

"Whenever something comes up, we're always concerned and it's always important to address the issue and get to the facts of it and understand what happened," Carroll said. "I'm very concerned about Rey, in general, because there's some very serious family things going on and all that.

"I just want to make sure we do a good job of helping him understand what's going on, what this all means. I don't know anything more than that."

I think the whole thing is hilarious. What's the big deal? At this point in the season, every team needs things to lighten the mood a little bit.

Some of you have said that Carroll was acting inappropriately for a man his age. Maybe that's part of the reason he can recruit so well; he can relate to the kids and show them that although he's quite a bit older then them, he can relate to them and understand them.

Bravo Pete. I for one appreciate the joke.

USC is flashy.

If you think that they aren't the media darling of college football (with ND a close second) then you just aren't paying attention.

But what I said to other fans when they were relishing in the beating that Ohio State took in the media over the past few years still holds true: your turn is going to come.

Matt Leinart's Hummer may be on the up and up (the one he's driving, not the one from Lachey  ). His parents could very well have taken out a loan based on his projected future earnings. I'm not sure if that's allowed or not, but I can't see why that would be violation since YOU are the person responsible for eventually paying the money back.

But all it takes is one pissed off player to say that Leinart got special treatment. All it takes is one photo of Leinart getting into that car when it's been reported that he's "so down to earth and still drives the same car he drove in high school."

Like highlonesome said a few pages back: The only story better than the "USC is still on top" story is the story about USC "running an outlaw program." At least in the eyes of the media.

I think anyone here can "appreciate" the joke. The two points that have been brought up, however, aren't about the joke itself. If a coach wants to try to lighten the mood of his team, then so be it. But I have a hard time understanding how anybody here can honestly refuse to see the tastelessness of this "joke". If you want to drop a suicide joke on a couple of good friends, then so be it, it's your call, and you know your friends. But to basically fake a somebody's suicide in front of at least a hundred witnesses is just piss-poor taste.

The other argument is that had this been anyone other than the great Pete Carroll, the media reaction would have been significantly different. We here at tOSU should know this. People's perceptions are greatly influenced by the media, and nobody will be able to tell me that this so-called joke would have garnered a similiar reaction had a different person orchestrated it.

If that is what it takes to loosen a football team up than he has one sick football team.

I don't know about some of you guys, but if I saw even a dummy of my best friend falling off a building it would trip me out, it wouldnt loosen me up, it wouldnt be funny.

Why not turn the sprinklers on during practice, or something stupid like that.

It's official (I said it when I started this thread and I'll say it again now with the recent events - USC is the media darling). The article below is no where on the ESPN site, but there are two articles giving Petey a hummer and one about a student who was killed during the World's Biggest Cocktail Party. Battery, A ok by them!

There was an article about the incident on ESPiN's College football page, which I only went to today because CBS.sportline doesn't have the QB efficiency rating - I swear!

How exactly does Carroll know every detail about every player? I'm sure that any players struggling with depression/suicide would just immediately tell him about that (despite the shame/seclusion that depression usually entails). I'm sure he knows about every family member, because I know I sure told all of my coaches about all of my troubled relatives that took their own lives.

You don't share that with someone unless you are very comfortable opening up, and football players are hardly the right demographic to assume they all have confided in Carroll.

You have obviously never been in a football lockerroom as a player. Your assessment is as shortsighted as the ones you are chastising imo.

I have been in a locker room, in football, bball and baseball. There is no way that everyone person confides in one coach, considering there are so many players on the team. That is why there are position coahces, each player goes to individual coaches, and you have to figure there are people that are unhappy with the coach for whatever reason, big oe being Pt(just like Fred Davis was unhappy with Pete last year)
