USC is the NCAA darling?

I think it's over line, as well. He could have come up with a better prank. I guarantee, based on numbers, there are USC players who thought it was over the line also, but I doubt you will hear anything from them. They don't want to be called pussies by Thump :wink2:.
If Barry Switzer had done this at Oklahoma the headline would have been "Sick and Twisted Prank Pulled by Boorish Oklahoma Coach"

And I think that is my problem more than anything is how the media handles things. Two coaches or players could do the exact same thing and the media is going to spin it to fit into what they perveive as reality.

I had a close family member who commited suicide as well and I did make the connection a little. At the end of the day though he was having some fun with his players on Haloween. Lack of focus etc etc nope, he was having fun with the kids.

Dude, are you just trying to bait us into an argument or what?

I made my point clear and don't feel the need to get into an argument over this.

Quit being so hypersensitive..

So, you're going to accuse me of baiting, and then you're going to call me hypersenstive? Interesting.

And while this wasn't directed at me specifically: "People need to fucking lighten up and quit being such pussies."

I'm simply examining the strength of your convictions on the point you "made clear" I'm looking for the justification for making light of a suicide.

I'm certain Petey is sensitive to his players and would not have attempted that particular Halloween prank if one of the players had a relative who had committed suicide by jumping off a four-story building. The comparison between Carroll and Knight is apples and oranges, particularly since Carroll does not have a history of public meltdowns or violence.

Carroll was having fun at a practice with his team. It's their own business regardless whether the media filmed it or not. If none of his players didn't take issue with it then this is an absolute non-story.

Carroll is a players' coach, and the guys feed off of that. Anyone who questions why the USC staff would engineer a stunt like that rather than practice in full pads during week 10 apparently hasn't seen what this coach-player relationship translates into on the field. To suggest that playing a 30 minute practical joke is evidence that this team is too loose and will lose to Cal or UCLA is equivilent for blaming the Buckeyes 2003 loss at Wisconsin on the team for wasting an hour of practice time putting hair extensions and cornrows on JT's head after the 2002 National Title.

This coach/player comraderie is as important as Xs and Os. This is what separates the Jim Tressels from the John Coopers ... the Mack Browns from the John Mackovics.

Honestly, I think this is a good move on Carroll's part, because he has cleverly taken a team issue (LenDale's unhappiness with his role in the offense earlier in the year) and made it something that everyone on the team can laugh at.

If you thought that comment was made at you, it wasn't. It was made to all of the people I saw on TV last night and heard on the radio this morning complaining about it.

There's tons of jokes played on people that have to do with death. So having a Halloween decoration of a fake person hanging from a tree by a nouse is inappropriate?

Is dressing up as a serial killer for Halloween inappropriate to you?

My main problem is in today's media and society we're always worried about hurting someone's feelings or self-esteem.

Are there jokes that cross the line, yes. Is this one of those times, in my opinion "No."

God forbid college kids have a little fun.

If you were a scout team freshman running back and you took offense to this "prank" would you complain about it?
There is no way you can convince me that this didn't negatively affect any single player on the USC football team simply by saying "Pete knows his players". That's BS, he doesn't know all of them that well.
If the mother of the Penn running back that committed suicide takes offense, is it a story then?

Or are now you saying that you're asking me to quit being hypersensitive was you writing an open letter to all the people you saw on TV last night and heard on the radio this AM?

Nope, it's not inappropriate to dress up as a serial killer on halloween. Why? Time and Place. Having a campy person hanging from a tree is halloween goofiness as well - time and place... unless, I suppose, it's supposed to be a black guy and you've got burning T's in your yard.

I'm not worried about hurting anyone's feelings. I'm saying the concept is wholly inappropriate. Would it be OK if Garry Barnett had a player fake rape someone? How about if Barry Switzer, back in his day, pulled a gun and capped Marcus Dupree just in jest...

This pretty much sums up what BKB and Cowherd are saying. Because it's Pete Carroll and USC, then you say "Pete Carroll knows his players and keeps practices light.". If it's somebody who hasn't won 30 games in a row (lets say...Rick Nuehisel), then it turns into "Nuehisel's prank goes too far.".

We're not going to agree on this so you are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine and we'll leave it at that.
