USC is the NCAA darling?

BuckeyeFlorida

Resident Science Dork
I heard an interesting conversation on the radio yesterday (can't remember if it was Bucks Radio w/ Jim Lachey or it it was ESiPN), but never the less, they raised an interesting point.

- If you look at most of the major programs who won NCs during in the last 20 years, immediately after, they came under extreme scrutiny from the NCAA (Miami - JJ years, FSU, us), but so far, USC has avoided similar scrutiny. The question is then, why?

-
Additionally (speculation rather than fact), how is it that Matt Leinhart is able to attend all of these A list parties, get into super-exclusive clubs, and hang with celebs without having violated some NCAA rule (You mean to tell me that no one have ever given him something while he out and about? (i.e. - no one has ever bought him dinner, drinks, or cigars or paid for a round of golf or etc...). Seems very improbable to me and to the radio hosts as well.

So unless Petey is running a squeaky-clean program (doubtful), then why isn't the NCAA at least looking at it? I believe (and I think others will agree) that most of our program's problems stemmed from having an athlete who was unhappy and unwilling to put a smile on and go to work in spite of it. As a result of him running his mouth in the media (see ESPN the Rag, Fiesta Bowl interviews, etc ... ), we got a lot of attention which lead to an exorbitant amount of scrutiny. USC seems to have a lot of happy campers who aren't attracting attention for the wrong reasons. Good press = less scrutiny? I hate USC and Petey as much as anyone, but perhaps it says something about his program management?

Coincidence or are they truly a media darling?

Thoughts?

yes...maybe leinart is taking some things for free that no one knows about..

but is it really to hard to believe that USC is just that good of a football team?? I mean do they really have to be up to something just cause they have been winning?

I understand the discussion and there are some very valid points.

However, my honest feelings on the matter revolve around the premise that if we need this type of reasoning to knock USC from their throne, I don't want it. Some of that is based on our own MoC experiences, but most of it is wanting to see it happen on the field instead of at the hand of some geek like Myles Brand.

You seemed to have missed the crux of the post, perhaps my fault.

No, winning does not always stem from improprieties. What seems strange is that (at least publicly), no one seems to have even looked in their direction. Given the trend of winning NCs and increased NCAA scrutiny, it seems odd, that's all.

That's not really the question: I mean, OSU wasn't breaking rules on its way to the 2002 NC, but it was sure followed by a shitstorm of media and NCAA scrutiny, much like other recent champions. The question posed here is: does USC get a free pass, and why? I'd say: yes (truly a media darling), and I don't know (why).

Miami was dirty. FSU was dirty. And whether we like it or not. The perception of tOSU from the Cooper years through the MNC was not squeaky clean. USC is not being investigated because they haven't given anyone any reason to do so. Mo gave the NCAA a reason, so they checked it out. I don't have a problem with us being investigated and USC not being investigate. What I have a problem with is sensationalist journalists that don't let the facts get in the way of a good story.

The key word in all of that is "hang". There is nothing wrong with partying with your firends. you buddy can buy you a drink as it is probable that you will buy something with for them later. Im sure that when justin zwick goes out with the guys they alternate rounds(or have at least done so in the past) In leinharts case his "friends" happen to be a little more high profile

I don't see them as a media darling, I see them as a team that has had a good run as of late........and hasn't gotten caught yet.

To echo what Grad21 said, I'd rather see them dethroned by another team.......not the media.

I'm with the earlier posters. I'd rather see them get unseated on the field, not in the press. I wouldn't want anyone to go through what we went through.

I think ESPiN started sniffing around originally because of Clarett. No need to mention what came later. USC hasn't had their Clarett.

On the other hand, it could just be that the numbers make it a lot easier to hit programs in smaller cities. Not everyone in LA is a USC fan but the market sure is a lot bigger than the other places that have been mentioned. Could TV and Radio market size have anything to do with it?

I think you kind of answered your own question when you brought up Clarett. Here was a kid who was/is a reporter's wet dream. He was bad mouthing the football factory and claiming improprieties and they took it and ran with it. The NCAA had no choice but to come in or it would appear that they weren't doing their jobs.

If Lendale White was doing the same thing then it would be the lead story on espin, the Dan Patrick show, Colin Cowherd, and on the front page of the web site.

The fact that there was nothing to what Clarett was saying and that the NCAA was only able to "find" the Troy Smith wrong doing was obviously not reported with the same zeal.

The NCAA doesn't want these programs to get into trouble. These are their cash cows. The Michigans, USCs, Ohio States, and Miamis of the world generate big money for the NCAA. If they get into serious trouble then the NCAA pocket book takes a hit. I don't believe that the NCAA truly wants to find anything with any of the big time football schools.

The media on the other hand...USC is most definitely a media darling right now.

I like your argument, but I don't buy it. I think you just wanted to paste a bunch of tables:tongue2:.

I think USC is just as dirty as the average major college program. There are some guys getting some stuff they shouldn't, but not in huge quantities and not in a "Blue Chips" kind of way. Anyone who thinks their favorite program is squeaky clean is probably deluded. With the amount of money circulating around an elite football program, and a few dozen 18-21 year old kids there is bound to be some level of impropriety (at least as far as NCAA rules go). There may be a D-1A program that hasn't broken a single NCAA rule in the past year, but I wouldn't put $5.00 on it.

I hope USC is knocked from their perch soon, but as with most of you, I want to see it on the field. I'm sure Leinart is well aware that there are probably 400 people with camera phones every time he steps into a club, and he's smart enough to keep his nose clean.

A couple USC stories I find disturbing.

First I don't know if anyone saw this weekend, where ABC did a little interview with Snoop Dogg and and he said Lendale White is going to Score a td and then he is going to toss me the ball. Sure enough that is what happened. I cannot believe this, I think it is ridiculous.

Then I heard this story on PTI that Pete Carrol and Lendale White set up a prank where Lendale would leave practice and then they had a dummy up on top of a building outside practice and the through the dummy off the top of the building, making the team all think Lendale was jumping from the top of the building. WTF kind of prank is that.

I don't know if it is just all that Hollywood shit or what, but I don't think shit like that belongs in cfb.
