US Open Playoff (revised)

I think if Tiger goes back in Jack's time, that indeed he will have considerably less majors than now, but so would Jack.

I think the total at the end of their careers would probably tally up to be something like 14 for Tiger and 12 for Jack.

Don't go making it Saint Tiger while I'm still Pope.

WHEN: Tiger has 18 majors and when he even comes close to Jack in Top Three/Top Ten finishes we'll talk. Till then he's still just an exceptional golfer.

I hate to be THAT guy, but wins are what matters, and that's it. Just my opinion. Sure the top tens and top 3's and runner ups show that he is a really good golfer. But you can't measure greatness by how many times someone was "first loser".

Don't read any disrespect into my posts regarding Tiger. He's an exceptional player and his victory on Monday, injury or no injury, is the stuff of legends. He has the potential to equal or better Jack's records, but that can't be based on number of majors won soley. You must take overall finishes also into the comparison.

When you do that you get a clearer picture of just what, and who, Tiger is chasing.

If Tiger gets healthy and remains that way, and then does what everyone seems to think he'll do, then comparing him and Nicklaus will be like comparing Lance Armstrong and Eddy Mercx.

I can understand the people who root against Tiger Woods because he is threatening Nicklaus's records, and I appreciate that people are taking that much pride in a Buckeye like that. I enjoy seeing Tiger's greatness though since I am too young to have seen Nicklaus play. Plus, I think that what Tiger is doing and his reverence for the history of the game shines another light on what Jack did.

I just don't think you can compare Jack and Tiger as far as who is a better golfer. The equipment is so much different, the physical exercise part of the game, the rest of the players. Everything is so much different now than it was back in the mid-60s to mid-70s.

But you still can make that comparison because those change are in place for everyone - making the competition stiffer as well. The point that Jack's body may have broken down faster than Tiger's (although it looks now like the opposite could be a possibility) is the one area where todays conditioning gives Tiger the edge.

Comparison to peers is certainly a valid issue. But were Arnie and Gary that good? Or were the next level of players substandard?

(Not to go OT - but I am always tickled when folks compare guy like Bonds to Babe Ruth. Sure the pitching wasn't as strong, and yada, yada, yada. But in 1919 the Yankees led the major leagues in Home Runs with 45 - as a team. In 1920 Ruth hit 54. Nobody else in the major leagues had 20 that year.)

Jesus, how much plainer can I make it. When Tiger reaches the level of Jack's records I will put him in the same consideration. He has determination, skill and attitude, but until he rings up the numbers he's just another exceptionally good golfer.
