FSU might not seem like a good job because everyone knows following Bowden will be tough. But FSU is seen nationally as a far better football power than FL. And Miami is a job that almost guarantees its coach a national title. Miami is the easiest place to recruit to in the nation, and it's not even close.
Opinions among Seminoles, Canes and Gators alike here in Tallahassee are as follows:
- Something that very few OSU fans even know about (because it hasn't been an issue for OSU for 50 years) is called "Full endowment of the scholarships". FSU's football scholarships are not fully endowed. They were still a woman's school back when Florida's scholarships reached full endowment status. The practical upshot is that they have to allocate money from the Athletic Department budget every year to fund scholarships. This takes away from their ability to provide for other things that are taken for granted at Florida. This is a big topic of discussion on sports talk shows around here right now.
- Even the Seminole fans concede that Florida has a much more established "tradition" than they do.
- Miami has a prime recruiting position, but their facilities are a train wreck, their AD is Paul Dee and their President is Donna Shalala(sp?).
- Bobby's age is a huge issue. When he retires, the endowment issue is going to limit what they can pay a coach. That is what they are saying on the talk shows anyway. They are still recruiting well, but with the way things have been going lately; how long will that last?
Now how much of that is just trying to drum up booster support so that they can fully endow the scholarships? I don't know. I'm just sayin'...
