Urban Meyer Our Next Coach?

Urban Meyer won't be Ohio State's next coach. He will have made his name for himself long before then. Perhaps he has already "made it," at this point. Ohio State, in 15-20 years, will either promote from within Tressel's staff, or hire a successful coach from a smaller school.

I can't speak for everyone, but I can't see anyone wanting to be Tressel's heir to the Ohio State coaching job. You never want to be the guy who follows the legend. You want to be the guy who follows the guy who follows the legend. (Example: You'd want to be Urban Meyer more than you'd want to be Ron Zook.) (Exception: I'd rather be Earle Bruce than John Cooper.)

Thank you. In that case I vote for Luke Fickell instead of Meyer as our next coach.

As utopian of an idea as Fickell may be, I'm not sure a guy with zero head coaching experience would get the job.

Possible of course, but I'm not sure it would happen.

I see Fickell getting a head job within the next two years. Maybe a MAC type school.

I guarantee you Meyer will go to the NFL.

Good point. He, like Suprier, will want to try his offense in the big league. He, like Spurier, will find it don't work that way in the NFL and will crawl back to the college ranks looking for a program he can turn around to prove himself worthy again. Won't be tOSU though.

So just for thinking about, What or how much more experience would Luke have to get to qualify for the head coaches job.
Or should this be a new thread?
8-10 years at two different schools?

No idea. It would vary from coach to coach I guess. Look at Fitzgerald this year...he was Walker's right-hand man but quickly found out there is more to being the HC than calling plays. However, a guy like Bret Bielema has done just fine in his first year.

..but tOSU is not a Wisconsin or a Northwestern.

Great point grad.

Bielema was groomed for the job, and Alvarez did a great job of leaving the program in good shape for the transition.

It is doubtful that Walker was doing anything w.r.t. a future transition, and he almost certainly was not grooming Fitzgerald for his job.

With JT, I would be willing to bet that he will leave the program in great shape for a transition when he chooses to leave.
