Urban F. Meyer (Former OSU, CFB and NFL coach)

The "Old Urban" is gone. He's still going to keep winning games and people are going to say he isn't gone but the truth is those wins are coming from recruiting that is so much better than the schools he is playing against.

An elite coach at the top of his game doesn't have an Iowa and a Purdue in back to back years.

I can't blame him. He's already been at the top of the sport three times. He's made all the money in the world. Now he has grandkids to focus on.

But this is Ohio State and we compete for National Championships, and if you don't have the fire to keep competing for them, then just retire

The Old Urban like the one that completely outclassed by Dantonio in the B1G Championship after riding a long win streak that covered up some big team flaws? Honestly doesn't seem that different to me.

Sometimes the obvious narrative is right - maybe this offseason has taken its toll emotionally and physically and Urban is thinking about hanging it up. But sometimes we tend to focus on these things and make the narrative what we want it to be. Maybe this is a misstep a la Iowa 2017 and MSU 2015 and we make changes and start playing up to our potential.

Edit: The headaches are undeniably real and let's hope that is all that they are and coach addresses the issue in the offseason. Because if it is more serious, then we will be without any Urban, old or new.

build more consistency when it comes to coaching hires and key player recruiting.

you seriously want him to be more "consistent"?

The only two guys who have ever won more consistently than Meyer are dead.

The only guy who consistently out recruits Meyer has a job at Bama and ain't leaving for Columbus.

Am I wrong in feeling that all of these speculations about his health, including my own, are disrespectful and probably serve no good purpose? He got handed a manure sandwich to start the season and he has an arachnoid cyst that is congenital and causes headaches. He's the guy that mentioned the unidimensionality of the offense the minute he could speak when he returned. Personally, I expect him to be all out of bubble gum and to see something completely different in two weeks.

Put yourself in his shoes. He has one of the most talent-rich teams in the country. They have been battered by injuries, lost two of their best and several other top players, and just got their arses handed to them by bloody Purdue. Several of these assistant coaches would seem to need to have their fortunes read. I'm happy to leave that in his hands.

I think he’s talking about the urban that showed up in 2012. The urban that would choke you over a game a checkers. The urban that pumps up his players, and throws his headset when the refs fuck up. The urban that takes risks on the field. Since midway through the 2015 season he has slowly quieted down. Now he’s standing alone hanging his head on the sidelines. Before it looked like he was enjoying it. Now it looks like just a job.

Anyone who wants to see Urban leave should be very wary of what that could mean from a player standpoint. I’m not talking just recruits but existing players who could opt to leave. Based on what’s going on with the NCAA I’m guessing they would be allowed to transfer and not have to sit. I’m further guessing there would be a lot of coaches rerecruitung our players.

I get what you're saying about Iowa/Purdue in back to back years, but the "old" Urban also lost to Carr in 07, got blown out by Bama in 2009, and went 7-5 before having a breakdown and needing to take a year off.

He needs to get things right, start making tough coaching decisions, and move forward. Stop letting things fester until you get blown out and build more consistency when it comes to coaching hires and key player recruiting.

I think the problem is Urban has never done that, I don't thinks he is as cold when it comes to business, as is Saban, for example. Someone said that 7 years ago a Florida guy warned him about that side of Urban, if that is true, then I wouldn't expect him to change the way he handles business now at the age of 54. If Saban was our coach last night, Bill Davis, Studrawa and maybe even Schiano, wouldn't have boarded the bus back to Columbus.

But what if he doesn't have the drive anymore to do the job, what if he is worried about the effect football has on his health, what if he does end up walking out on his own accord, do you think players would abandon ship anyway ? The truth is if they did, then good riddance, we don't, or shouldn't at least, want players that don't wanna be here, unless they are getting a pre-nfl contract, per say, to stick with the program.

Urban has empowered his players versus a Saban who won’t. One is a better human the other is a better coach.
WTF are you talking about!?!?!

Not just this, but anyone who thinks that Urban should leave is seriously out of their freaking minds! I get it, we lost, we lost for another year, to a team that we shouldn't. IT HAPPENS FOLKS! We all know that the team has some major holes, but its one loss, for a team. It shows how spoiled our fan base is when they can call for one of the greatest HCs in CFB history to be fired, when our "off years" with him are winning NY6 bowls! For those asking for Urban to be gone, just ask yourselves who would you want to replace him, and do you think that next hire would have the record that Urban has as of today? I get it, we're all angry and disappointed at a team that should look much better. But we called for Urban to stop with the playcalling(it happened), we wanted a better passing threat QB(it happened), now it's certainly on Urban to make some better assistant hires, and we all know that he's deathly loyal to his assistants. The talent level at OSU is to a level that the only other program that we can compare ourselves to is Alabama, and the 2 coaches couldn't be more different personality wise. But the fan bases are every bit as rabid(and delusional) during loses. There will be most likely no staffing changes made until the end of the season, so we might as well suck it up and hope that each assistant can shore up his area. If there's a person fans should be mad at, it's Ryan Day. And no, I'm not starting the pitchfork brigade at him, but he, Stud and Meyer need to sit down and figure out a way to get this run game going, because the cute RPO BS ain't cutting it when everyone knows that Haskins ain't running it. Heck, if teams like WashSt, Oregon, Texas Tech and other pass happy offenses can find running games, without DT QBs, we sure as hell should be able to do the same

Dude. Seriously. WTF. Really. "Someone said..."? "Doesn't have the drive anymore?" This is meaningless and silly speculation, newbie. Did everyone hop on the bus after Iowa last year.

Here is what we know.
  • Object of a preseason hatchet job.
  • University handles things badly
  • Comes back and among his first comments is that the kids with the keys are not developing the running game
  • Has had this cyst and headaches since birth
  • Has won a higher percentage of football games than any peer still living.
  • No players are going anywhere.
Come in off the ledge, dude. They're rolling up the airbags.

Point taken, he's obviously one of the most consistent winners in the game's history and probably the 2nd best coach going right now. Not arguing that. But yes, I do think he needs to be more consistent when it comes to coaching hires and building something schematically. I'm not a fool who thinks he's suddenly lost his edge and can't coach anymore, but he's reaching for something with certain hires that isn't there.

Since 2014, he's struggled to put together a full staff without some very obvious blemishes that have held this team back from reaching their potential. Beck, promoting Warriner, Davis, and the defensive scheme this year. Beck and Warriner were terrible decisions that should've been nipped in the bud after 2015 and yet continued to plague the program for an extra year until OSU suffered one of the worst post-season loses in program history. Davis has struggled to teach whatever he's trying to teach to the LBs since last year, and the defensive scheme is being easily manipulated every single game, from 110th ranked offenses to good ones.

To me, the offense is more complicated. It's going to continue to evolve and there will be bumps in the road depending on the QB. Defense is different. Find someone like Ash who can play an aggressive quarters style of defense that dictates the game instead of creating 1 v 1 matchups that will be picked apart. Then when there is turnover every 2-5 years find someone who knows how to operate this system, makes positive tweaks, and hire them. Don't try to reinvent the wheel with hyper-aggressive schemes that just set the team back.

I didn't say the players were going away, I was just making the point to the other user, that if Urban left, forced or willingly, the program would still be standing up. I don't want him to leave either, unless, of course, he doesn't feel like he can't handle all the job anymore, I just wish he changed the way he deals with his assistants. Another thing that's bothering me, is that somehow all the losses, to Iowa, Purdue, MSU '15 and Clemson are somehow eerily similar. Just disastrous game plans and maybe preparation ?
