Plus, how will they ever fill that place for a UNLV football game?

They'd actually get marquee opponents to give them a true home-and-home. If you're an AD and want to get your team in the Southwest to appease the alumni, UNLV with that stadium would be a hell of a lot more attractive than ASU or TCU. Getting a non-conference road game against a team that isn't near as dangerous as ASU or TCU in any given year is a bonus.

The blue-haired retirees can enjoy their team from an air conditioned seat without waiting up for a 9:00 pm local kick-off and go pump money into slot machines the rest of the weekend.

I agree with all of the above. UNLV is a glorified community college that makes UNR look shiny in comparison. The state of Nevada is dead broke. However, neither the state of Nevada nor UNLV is going to pay for that. Potentially, the casinos will. It'll bring in a Super Bowl and--ncaa willing--a final four and maybe football championship site.

As for scheduling a home and home with UNLV, I think that's spot on. Easy fucking win for the visiting team (with loads of available seats for a visiting power team) and a great road weekend for the alumni.

That new stadium has been all over the news here. Early pics of it look pretty cool. The reason for the new stadium is to have the stadium actually on the campus. The current Sam Boyd stadium is about 7 miles east of the campus. Plus, they talk about it being used for mega events, going from a 37k stadium to hold around 60k people.

Just sayin': It will never get a Super Bowl unless there is a NFL team there. The NFL team owners wouldn't stand for it. The Super Bowl is a "cash cow" to help the owners pay for their stadiums and/or a reward for a city that helps fund a (new) stadium for a NFL team.

They held the Rosebowl in Pasadena one year and the game continually cycles between NoLa, Miami, and San Diego, with one and done venues stuck in between.

I think it would be great for a Superbowl. Arguably the worlds largest sporting event in the entertainment capital of America? Custom tailored fit IMO

The Rose Bowl is always in Pasadena.
Did you mean Super Bowl?

Vegas makes more money on the NFL sports book than they would off an NFL team, which mainly generates money for the team owners. I think an NFL team in Vegas would mean no NFL betting in Vegas, so I don't see that happening.

The other thing is, what kind of return on investment does this thing need to generate to make financial sense? If you figure 20% on a $1 billion stadium, thats $200 million a year. At $100 a person in tickets and beer for a sold-out event in a 60,000 seat stadium, you have $6 million in gross revenue per event. That's 34 sold out events a year to generate a 20% ROI not counting expenses, which seems pretty optimistic. Then again, I could be missing something.
