UNLV Rebels (Official Thread)

I in no way blame this kid, and place all blame on the NCAA. They had literally decades to make a proper NIL program and regulate this and they continually hid under the BS guise of the "student athlete". And now they allow NIL, and have no governing power whatsoever, because the schools are now laughing at them. The NCAA could've made schools share their revenue with players like they do with the coaches.
I'm sure more situations like this will arise more, and I can even see (unfortunately) a violent encounter between a kid/his family and a collective. When you promise money, and then don't pay that money, people will be emotional. I know that this kid, Sluka is now saying that's not the case, and IDK what to believe. But with no rules on boosters paying and promising large sums of money, there is bound to be issues. It will suck for us fans, and many fans will want to blame the players, when the clear blame is on the institution who should've been governing all a long a business that had a model where they didn't pay those doing all of the work. That's not sustainable, eventually the players were going to demand a cut, the players aren't dumb and the money CFB makes is transparent.

Nah I do. But not for leaving for what he wasn't promised.

I blame him (and his agent/parents/etc) for not getting that shit in writing first.

That's fair, but I'm sure many collectives are acting on handshake/good faith agreements. And I'm sure this will happen more and more. This is another reason why the collectives shouldn't have the power they do, they're essentially more powerful than the coaches at some programs. And more to what I said about the NCAA dropping the ball on this decades ago

How much do you think a “revenue share“ is at UNLV? UNLV‘s operating LOSS in 2022 was about $350 million, btw.

I think you're looking at the entire athletic department, while it seems the football program alone is set to make $36mil for recommitting to the Mountain West. $100k shouldn't be a major amount to raise. And its hard for me to believe that an NIL collective in Las Vegas of all places can't come up with that amount

It's either one of two things.

- school didn't deliver
- QB and his team (not the football one) re- assessing his "value" after a 3-0 start and strong arming the school.

Now that everything in life is purely transactional and all people seemingly care about is money, my bias will carry me towards initially believing the latter.

Well, its not that the school didn't deliver(since schools can't pay the players, yet). The NIL collective didn't deliver.
But like @Mike80 stated, nothing was in writing.
But the truth is somewhere in the middle. I'm sure the kid outperformed what he thought he was owed, and expected more, but also was never even given what he told he would receive. I don't think they're really strong arming the school, if the collective didn't pay what they agreed upon. But again, with no paperwork, its he said, he said. Kind of like the Jaiden Rashida situation at UF.

But what sucks for the school and coaches, is that it has nothing to do with them, since they don't pay or agree on any deals. But they're the ones who are punished for promises from random boosters. I can see this happening at scUM with the Portnoy situation where he came out and said he'd pay up to $3mil for an elite QB for scUM. But will he pay if that 5star or "top" QB doesn't pan out?

The revenue sharing model is for all athletes though. The Title IX lawsuits would be endless if they gave the football players a nickel more than the field hockey players.

I hear you, and you’re correct in that.

My sense is that this kid will end up like MJ Morris, who did the exact same thing last year with NC St. He‘s sitting the bench this year for Maryland.
Or he could just as easily be a Cam Ward or Dillon Gabriel for his new school. Or even, Will Howard… No one knows

The story gets more interesting

Good for UNLV. Kid and his dad tried to extort the university after three games and then tried to burn it down on their way out of town. Now, if the Vegas casinos decide to get involved with UNLV NIL, that could be a game changer for that program. Are they going to take 5* kids away from us? No. Could they become a powerhouse in the G6? Absolutely yes.
